Article Synopsis
  • Septins are GTP-binding proteins important for immune response, but not fully studied in fish.
  • The research involved cloning the septin 2 cDNA from rohu carp, revealing high similarity to a related fish species and showing its presence in various tissues.
  • The septin 2 gene was found to be upregulated in response to infections, and the produced recombinant protein provided protection against infections, suggesting its potential as a key player in fish antimicrobial defense.

The presence of aquatic biopolymeric organic carbon of high (> 10 - 20 kDa) molecular weight (high-MW OC) in drinking water produced from surface water affects its biological stability which may cause regrowth in disinfectant-free distribution. This study compares two analytical methods for determining the concentration of aquatic high-MW OC, namely LC-OCD (liquid chromatography - organic carbon detection) and PHMOC (particulate and colloidal high-molecular weight OC). LC-OCD entails prefiltration of the water sample, chromatographical separation of the relevant biopolymer (BP) OC-fraction, and in-line OC detection.

Apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, is essential for maintaining homeostasis within the internal environment. Caspase-8, an initiator caspase, plays a pivotal role in activating the caspase cascade during the apoptotic process. This study cloned and expressed Caspase-8 from goldfish, aimed to investigate the role of Caspase-8 in the immune response of fish to bacterial infections, specifically those caused by Aeromonas hydrophila.

Hemolytic proteins are a major group of virulence factors in pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila. Six genes encoding presumable hemolytic proteins were revealed from the genome of virulent A. hydrophila (vAh) that caused severe disease in channel catfish.

TLR (Toll-like receptor)-21 is a non-mammalian TLR and exhibits a unique function within the innate immune systems of fishes, birds, and amphibians. Despite its important role as PRR (pattern recognition receptor), research on TLR21 in many fish species, as well as in rohu (Labeo rohita), remains relatively limited. This article describes the molecular cloning of LrTLR21 (TLR21 in L.
