Tension fecal pneumothorax in a postpartum patient.

Chest

Department of Internal Medicine, Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC), Miami Beach 33140.

Published: March 1993

A 20-year-old woman developed severe shortness of breath 4 h after a cesarean section. Chest roentgenogram showed a pleural effusion and tension pneumothorax; insertion of a chest tube drained liquid stool. Background: Vesicourethral anastomosis stenosis (VUAS) is a well-known complication of prostate cancer treatments, observed in up to 26% of the cases after radical prostatectomy. Conservative management, with single or even repeated transurethral dilation or endoscopic incision of the stenosis, is successful in many cases, but up to 9% of patients are destined to fail after endoscopic treatment. In these cases, a revision of the vesicourethral anastomosis is necessary and can be realized with different surgical approaches.

Division mechanism of labor in Diqing Tibetan Pigs gut microbiota for dietary fiber efficiently utilization.

Microbiol Res

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition, College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Yuanmingyuan West Road 2, Haidian District, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

The Diqing Tibetan (TP) pig is an roughage tolerance breed that inhabits an area with the highest altitude distribution in the world and can be maintained on a diet containing 90 % forage material in confined production systems. Our results showed that TP pigs had a strong capability for high-efficiency utilization of arabinose and xylose. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the secretion of carbohydrate esterases was mainly undertaken by fecal strains of Microbacterium, Alistipes, Acinetobacter, and Faecalibacterium, while Microbacterium, Prevotella, Turicibacter, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, and Streptococcus were responsible for most of the secretion of glycoside hydrolases.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL), with the Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ) effectively measuring this relationship.* -
  • In a study of 1,020 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), key factors negatively affecting SIBDQ scores included stool frequency, disease activity, and corticosteroid use.* -
  • Follow-up assessments indicated that after an average of 3.4 years, 43% of patients experienced significant improvements in HRQoL, despite general well-being items remaining low.*

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of loop-end ileostomy (EI), introduced in 2021, in reducing stoma outlet obstruction (SOO) in patients undergoing restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), compared to traditional loop ileostomy (LI).
  • - Researchers analyzed 106 patients with diverting ileostomy, finding that EI significantly lowered the incidence of SOO (odds ratio 0.18) despite similar patient characteristics and surgery factors between the two groups.
  • - The conclusion suggests that EI is a promising approach to minimize SOO complications following RPC and IPAA, particularly in more complex anastomosis cases.

Comparative biophysical study of clinical surfactants using constrained drop surfactometry.

Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol

October 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States.

Surfactant replacement therapy is crucial in managing neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Currently licensed clinical surfactants in the United States and Europe, including Survanta, Infasurf, Curosurf, and Alveofact, are all derived from bovine or porcine sources. We conducted a comprehensive examination of the biophysical properties of these four clinical surfactant preparations under physiologically relevant conditions, using constrained drop surfactometry (CDS).
