Tumor embolus in lung surgery. A case report and review of the literature.

Eur J Cardiothorac Surg

Department of Surgery, De Wever Hospital, Heerlen, The Netherlands.

Published: April 1993

A 71-year-old man underwent a completion pneumonectomy for a recurrent carcinosarcoma of the left upper lobe. A single lumen endotracheal tube was used for intubation. During dissection the right main bronchus became blocked by a tumor mass. Due to severe adhesions it was impossible to open the airway from inside the operation field. This neither was also not possible by bronchoscopic maneuvers and the patient died. The case is similar to six cases described in the literature since 1966 [4-7, 9, 10]. Recommendations for preventing and treating the complications are given.

Mixed histiocytic sarcoma in a Bernese Mountain Dog.

J Vet Diagn Invest

January 2025

Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory-Microbiology, Immunology, Pathology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA.

An 8-y-old, spayed female Bernese Mountain Dog was presented to a referral center for evaluation of right thoracic limb lameness and previously suspected Evans syndrome that had been poorly responsive to immunosuppressive therapy. Based on review of examination findings and laboratory data, Evans syndrome was deemed unlikely and hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma (HHS) was strongly suspected. On blood smear evaluation, atypical, histiocytic cells were noted, some of which exhibited siderophagia.

The treatment landscape for advanced melanoma has transformed significantly with the advent of BRAF and MEK inhibitors (BRAF/MEKi) targeting V600 mutations, as well as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) like anti-PD-1 monotherapy or its combinations with anti-CTLA-4 or anti-LAG-3. Despite that, many patients still do not benefit from these treatments at all or develop resistance mechanisms. Therefore, prognostic and predictive biomarkers are needed to identify patients who should switch or escalate their treatment strategies or initiate an intensive follow-up.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of bone (PLB) is an ultrarare tumor, characterized by its aggressive clinical behavior, high heterogeneity, and dismal prognosis. Here, we present the 68Ga-FAPI-04 and 18F-FDG PET/CT findings in a case of PLB affecting the left femur. FAPI PET/CT showed more bone lesions and higher uptake in the multiple metastatic lesions compared with FDG PET/CT.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a diverse group originating from endocrine cells/their precursors in pancreas, small intestine, or lung. The key serum marker is chromogranin A (CgA). While commonly elevated in patients with NEN, its prognostic value is still under discussion.

Liquid biopsy technologies: innovations and future directions in breast cancer biomarker detection.

Biomed Microdevices

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, The Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, 25 Taiping Street, Luzhou, 646000, Sichuan, People's Republic of China.

Globally, breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer, and its early diagnosis and screening can significantly improve the probability of survival and quality of life of those affected. Liquid biopsy-based targets such as circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, and exosomes have been instrumental in the early discovery of cancer, and have been found to be effective in stage therapy, recurrence monitoring, and drug selection. Biosensors based on these target related biomarkers convert the tested substances into quantifiable signals such as electrical and optical signals through signal transduction, which has the advantages of high sensitivity, simple operation, and low invasiveness.
