The rising prevalence of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in young women will increase the number of infected children worldwide. Because HIV-1 seems to be transmitted mostly intrapartum, fetal infection probably occurs mainly via skin or mucous membrane exposure. A model for this route of fetal infection has been established in primates. After injecting the simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) into amniotic fluid during late gestation, six of seven rhesus monkeys were born infected. All infected neonates were viable and showed signs of disease, such as low birth weights, lymphadenopathy, and rashes. Cytotoxic T-cell responses to SIV were absent in neonates, but present in mothers. The high fetal infection rate allows studies of lentiviral immunopathogenesis during ontogeny and the development of strategies to prevent maternal HIV-1 transmission.

HIV-1 envelope broadly neutralizing antibodies represent a promising component of HIV-1 cure strategies. To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of combination monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in a rigorous nonhuman primate model, we tested different combinations of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) neutralizing mAbs in SIVmac251-infected rhesus macaques. Antiretroviral therapy-suppressed animals received anti-SIV mAbs targeting multiple Env epitopes spanning analytical treatment interruption (ATI) in 3 groups (n = 7 each): i) no mAb; ii) 4-mAb combination; and iii) 2-mAb combination.

Background Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers are a global concern, particularly for sexual minority men (SMM). Understanding awareness and the determinants of these beliefs is crucial for developing educational programs to reduce HPV-associated cancers. This study explored awareness and determinants of beliefs about HPV's carcinogenicity among SMM living with and without HIV in Nigeria.

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Parasitologia, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos, 6627, Pampulha, CEP 31270901 Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Background: In the Americas, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) results from the zoonotic transmission of Leishmania infantum. VL has a high occurrence rate in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte (BH), Minas Gerais, Brazil, and has rapidly spread throughout the municipality since it was first recorded in 1994. This research analysed a historical perspective over 25 y of human VL occurrence in BH.

Efficacy and safety of risankizumab for the treatment of patients with plaque type psoriasis.

Ital J Dermatol Venerol

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan (ROC) -

Risankizumab (Skyrizi, Abbvie, North Chicago, IL, USA) is a humanized immunoglobulin (Ig) G1 monoclonal antibody targeting the p19 subunit of IL-23, thereby inhibiting IL-23-dependent releasing of proinflammatory cytokines in plaque psoriasis. Risankizumab is licensed is most countries for the treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, and in Japan for generalized pustular psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis. Risankizumab showed higher efficacy and favorable safety profiles in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, compared with adalimumab, secukinumab and ustekinumab in several randomized controlled phase 3 pivotal studies and among real-life data in large retrospective studies.

School of Public Health, Sun Yat-Sen University, 74 Zhongshan No. 2 Rd, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou510080, Guangdong, China.

Objective: To describe changes in access to voluntary human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counselling and testing services following the implementation of a mini-application (app) at primary health-care facilities across Guangzhou, China.

Methods: In 2018, the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Lingnan Community Support Center co-developed WellTest, a mini-app within the WeChat environment, to address voluntary counselling and testing service needs. The mini-app provides on-demand information for clients, links them to health services, and allows users to provide feedback on health-care quality and share test results with partners.
