To evaluate in vivo the proposed intrinsic thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) activity (TSA) of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), we monitored over 0.5-1 years the thyroid status of eight patients with hCG-producing non-seminomatous testicular cancer. The patients' sera were analyzed for concentrations of hCG, free thyroxine (fT4), hTSH, and thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG). All patients had excessively high concentrations of hCG (1 x 10(5)-5 x 10(8) ng/L, mean: 1 x 10(7) ng/L) before polychemotherapy, which decreased under successful therapy to physiological values (< 240 ng/L). Although the serum concentrations of hCG varied by more than six orders of magnitude, we saw no changes and no correlation (P > 0.05) between the concentrations of hCG and the concentrations of fT4 and hTSH. Not even when hCG concentrations were greatest (> 5 x 10(7) ng/L) were any signs of hyperthyroidism observed: fT4 (3.5-13 ng/L) and hTSH (9-700 ng/L) were in the physiological range in all patients and remained so during chemotherapy. The results of this longitudinal study were confirmed in analyzing the data for all eight patients (total: 82 samples) cross-sectionally. Again, we found no correlation (P > 0.05) between the concentrations of hCG and fT4 or hCG and hTSH. We conclude that even excessive amounts of testicular tumor-derived hCG do not display any TSH-like activity in vivo.

Photoperiodic changes induce seasonal variations in vitamin D levels, which can affect reproductive function. The muskrat, a seasonal breeder, possesses a pair of scented glands that secrete musky substances to attract mates. The scented glands can also synthesize androgens, which regulate their function through autocrine or paracrine signaling.

The current study investigated the effect of a single administration of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) and its nanoparticles (NPs) on testicular hemodynamics using Doppler ultrasonography, testicular volume, testicular echotexture (PIX), and circulating testosterone and nitric oxide (NO) in pubescent goat bucks during summer months. Fifteen Baladi goats were divided into three groups (5 in each) and subjected to a single intramuscular administration of one ml of physiological saline ( control group), one ml containing 500 IU of hCG (hCG group) or one ml containing 125 IU of hCG NPs (hCG NPs group). Testicular hemodynamics assessment was done just before administration (0 h), and at 2, 4, 6, 24, and daily till 7 days after administration.

(1) Background: Fetal chromosomal examination is a critical component of modern prenatal testing. Traditionally, maternal serum biomarkers such as free β-human chorionic gonadotropin (Free β-HCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPPA) have been employed for screening, achieving a detection rate of approximately 90% for fetuses with Down syndrome, albeit with a false positive rate of 5%. While amniocentesis remains the gold standard for the prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome and Edwards syndrome, its invasive nature carries a significant risk of complications, such as infection, preterm labor, or miscarriage, occurring at a rate of 7 per 1000 procedures.

The aim of this two-phase study was to evaluate the use of beet pulp concentrate (BPC) in athletic horses. On the first trial the effects of supplementation with 820g of BPC for 12 weeks were assessed and a crossover postprandial curves of blood biomarkers were determined in five adult Arabian mares. Differences were found in T-chol, HDL-chol, TPP and MCHC (p < 0.

The Southern Rocky Mountain boreal toad (Anaxyrus boreas boreas) depends on both the rearing of wild-collected egg masses and a long-standing conservation breeding program (CBP), the latter of which heavily relies on assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to support wild populations. Achieving consistent reproductive success in the CBP, however, remains a significant challenge. Natural breeding has not led to a sustained increase in reproductive capacity, prompting the exploration of exogenous hormone treatments as an alternative strategy.
