Article Synopsis
  • - Hemorrhage is the main cause of preventable death in trauma situations, leading to military and civilian advancements in medical practices, particularly through the use of tourniquets to manage extremity bleeding and save lives.
  • - While tourniquets have significantly decreased deaths from bleeding in military settings, noncompressible hemorrhage still poses a major risk, especially before patients receive definitive medical care.
  • - The study explores using a small, disposable pressure monitor during resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to enhance blood pressure monitoring, facilitate better resuscitation practices, and reduce the need for blood products in extreme environments.

Cellular therapy (CT) involving the transplantation of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) is a treatment modality for both benign and malignant disorders. All autologous products require cryopreservation while allogeneic product cryopreservation became more common during the Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Cells are stored in liquid nitrogen (LN) freezers which can malfunction and products may have to be temporarily stored in a mechanical -80 °C freezer if additional LN freezer space is not available.

Objective: To determine if the intraoperative transfusion requirements differ based on the mechanical circulatory device used as a bridge to heart transplantation.

Design: A single-center retrospective analysis of intraoperative transfusion requirements in all patients undergoing heart or heart/kidney transplantation between November 2018 and July 2021 who were bridged with a temporary (Impella 5.5) or durable left ventricular assist device (LVAD).
