The Global Influence of Sodium on Cyanobacteria in Resuscitation from Nitrogen Starvation.

Biology (Basel)

January 2023

Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine, University of Tübingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 28, 72076 Tübingen, Germany.

Dormancy and resuscitation are key to bacterial survival under fluctuating environmental conditions. In the absence of combined nitrogen sources, the non-diazotrophic model cyanobacterium sp. PCC 6803 enters into a metabolically quiescent state during a process termed chlorosis.

Purpose: To investigate recurrence patterns following anti-tubercular therapy (ATT) in different anatomical presentations of ocular tuberculosis (OTB).

Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinically diagnosed OTB patients divided anatomically into groups A (anterior + intermediate uveitis) and B (posterior + panuveitis). Recurrence was defined as reappearance of intraocular inflammation in a quiescent eye following completion of at least 6-months ATT.

The extent to which heterogeneity within mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) populations is related to function is not understood. Using the archetypal MSC in vitro surface marker, CD90/Thy1, here we show that 30% of the MSCs in the continuously growing mouse incisor express CD90/Thy1 and these cells give rise to 30% of the differentiated cell progeny during postnatal development. In adulthood, when growth rate homeostasis is established, the CD90/Thy1 MSCs decrease dramatically in number.

Advances in Developing Therapies to Combat Zika Virus: Current Knowledge and Future Perspectives.

Front Microbiol

August 2017

Cellular Immunology Lab, Frank Reidy Research Center of Bioelectrics, Old Dominion University, NorfolkVA, United States.

Zika virus (ZIKV) remained largely quiescent for nearly six decades after its first appearance in 1947. ZIKV reappeared after 2007, resulting in a declaration of an international "public health emergency" in 2016 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Until this time, ZIKV was considered to induce only mild illness, but it has now been established as the cause of severe clinical manifestations, including fetal anomalies, neurological problems, and autoimmune disorders.

Astaxanthin prevents and reverses the activation of mouse primary hepatic stellate cells.

J Nutr Biochem

March 2016

Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06269, USA; Institute of Systems Genomics, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06269, USA. Electronic address:

Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is a critical step that leads to the development of liver fibrosis. We showed that astaxanthin (ASTX), a xanthophyll carotenoid, displays antifibrogenic effects in LX-2 cells, a human HSC cell line. In this study, we further determined the effect of ASTX on HSC activation and inactivation using primary HSCs from C57BL/6J mice.
