Immunocytochemistry of skeletal muscle basal lamina grafts in nerve regeneration.

The influence on nerve regeneration of the extracellular matrix glycoprotein laminin was studied after sciatic nerve transection in 90 outbred Sprague-Dawley rats. Nerve regeneration through basal lamina grafts was comparable with regeneration through traditional nerve grafts across gaps up to 2.0 cm in length. True axonal regeneration rather than axonal branching was demonstrated by retrograde horseradish peroxidase labeling of nerve cables. Pretreatment of basal lamina grafts with antilaminin antibodies reduced the total number of regenerated axons by 90 percent with a significant decrease of nerve conduction velocity and a significant impairment of walking track patterns. The basement membrane glycoprotein laminin serves a critical role in the regeneration of peripheral nerves through basal lamina grafts.

Descemet's membrane (DM) detachment is a significant, if rare, risk of intracameral injection of viscoelastic to treat hypotony after glaucoma filtration surgery. We describe two cases of DM detachment following inadvertent injection of viscoelastic into the posterior stroma and the techniques used for their repair. In both cases, conventional air tamponade failed to resolve the detachment, and further surgical intervention was required.

Objective: In severe equine asthma, structural remodeling of the airways ultimately leads to bronchial wall thickening and airflow obstruction. Increased bronchial vascularization has been described in horses affected by the severe form of the disease, but whether it contributes to bronchial remodeling in milder forms of asthma remains to be determined. This is a retrospective cross-sectional diagnostic test accuracy study of direct immunofluorescence (DIF) performed on a group of potential lupus erythematosus (LE)/dermatomyositis (DM) skin biopsies from 2015 to 2020 at a large, academic medical center. For purposes of this study, which was focused primarily on detection of LE/DM-related interface dermatitis, DIF was considered positive for a LE/DM pattern if it showed granular deposition of immunoglobulin G, with or without C3, at the basement membrane zone on the final pathology report. Blinded clinicopathologic correlation was the reference standard.
