In experiments using primary monolayer cultures norepinephrine, isoproterenol, and serotonin (10(-6)-10(-5) M) inhibited the rate of total protein biosynthesis more effectively in pituitary cells of pubertal and sexually mature rats as compared to neonates and prepubertal animals. Acetylcholine (10(-5)M) reduced the rate of total protein synthesis in pituitary cells of pubertal rats but did not change this parameter of functional activity in pituitary cells of neonatal animals. Norepinephrine and isoproterenol inhibited the rate of DNA synthesis in pituitary cells of newborn rats whereas serotonin and acetylcholine were of no avail in this respect. These results permit us suggest an important role of neurohumoral agents in regulation of rat pituitary cells growth and functional activity during the postnatal development.

There is growing interest in understanding the complex relationship between psychosocial stress and the human gastrointestinal microbiome (GIM). This review explores the potential physiological pathways connecting these two and how they contribute to a pro-inflammatory environment that can lead to the development and progression of the disease. Exposure to psychosocial stress triggers the activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA), leading to various physiological responses essential for survival and coping with the stressor.

Objectives: In the last two decades, scientists have gained a better understanding of several aspects of pituitary development. The signaling pathways that govern pituitary morphology and development have been identified, and the compensatory relationships among them are now known.

Aims: This paper aims to emphasize the wide variety of relationships between Pituitary Gland and Stem cells in hormone Production and disease prevention.

CD9/SOX2-positive cells in the intermediate lobe of the rat pituitary gland exhibit mesenchymal stem cell characteristics.

Cell Tissue Res

Laboratory of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Department of Health Sciences, Kyorin University, 5-4-1 Shimorenjaku, Mitaka, Tokyo, 181-8612, Japan.

Adult tissue stem cells of the anterior pituitary gland, CD9/SOX2-positive cells, are believed to exist in the marginal cell layer (MCL) bordering the residual lumen of the Rathke's pouch. These cells migrate from the intermediate lobe side of the MCL (IL-MCL) to the anterior lobe side of the MCL and may be involved in supplying hormone-producing cells. Previous studies reported that some SOX2-positive cells of the anterior lobe differentiate into skeletal muscle cells.

Invasiveness of pituitary adenoma is the main cause of its poor prognosis, mechanism of which remains largely unknown. In this study, the differential proteins between invasive and non-invasive pituitary tumors (IPA and NIPA) were identified by TMT labeled quantitative proteomics. The differential metabolites in venous bloods from patients with IPA and NIPA were analyzed by untargeted metabolomics.

Recent advances in the dual effects of activin A on tumors.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

January 2025

Department of Genetics, College of Basic Medical Sciences, Jilin University, Jilin, Changchun, 130021, PR China. Electronic address:

Activin A, a gonadal protein, not only stimulates the pituitary to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) but also plays a crucial role in regulating various cell behaviors, such as cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion. Studies have shown an association between activin A expression and tumor progression, highlighting its dual role in cancer. Similar to transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), activin A can have both pro-tumor and anti-tumor effects, for instance, it inhibits the migration of lung adenocarcinoma cells, while promotes the migration of triple-negative breast cancer cells.
