An entire 18S rRNA gene sequence from Schistosoma spindale (1990 bases) and partial 18S rRNA gene sequences from S. haematobium (1950 bases) and S. japonicum (1648 bases) have been determined. Together with the previously published sequence of the S. mansoni 18S rRNA gene, these data encompass the 4 recognized Schistosoma species groups. Although Schistosoma 18S rRNA genes are highly conserved, the sequences permit a preliminary molecular phylogeny to be established for the genus. This identifies S. haematobium and S. spindale as sister taxa in a clade with S. mansoni. S. japonicum does not appear to be closely related to this clade. Much of the observed variation occurs within a 'hypervariable' stretch of the gene corresponding to part of the V4 region of 18S rRNA. Despite this variation, the 3 new sequences fit models of 18S rRNA secondary structure predicted from the S. mansoni sequence.

Endophytic fungi are non-pathogenic organisms that colonise healthy plant tissues asymptomatically. Endophytes derived from medicinal plants are sources for identifying natural products and bioactive compounds with potential uses for industry, medicine, agriculture, and related sectors. In the present study, ethyl acetate crude extracts of four endophytic fungal isolates (CALF1, CALF4, and CASF1) from the medicinal plant Plectranthus amboinicus showed potent antimicrobial activity against the test pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis using disc diffusion assays.

Based on the potential bactericidal properties of borate, we synthesized controlled-release borate (CRB) as a novel biocide to inhibit microbial proliferation in a recirculating cooling water system (RCS). In this study, toxicity experiments of CRB were conducted on the dominant bacteria and algae isolated from an actual RCS. The effects of CRB on biocidal performance and genotoxicity were evaluated in a simulated RCS.

Background: The identification of helminth parasites in Schizothorax spp. from Kashmir, including Schyzocotyle acheilognathi, Pomphorhynchus kashmirensis, and Adenoscolex oreini, is hindered by morphological limitations and high intraspecific variation. While previous studies have relied on morphological diagnosis, a comprehensive molecular characterization is lacking.

is a genus of parasitic protozoa known to cause diarrheal disease that impacts both humans and animals through infection of various vertebrate species. Bats are recognized as reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens, including . The Philippines, renowned for its rich biodiversity, is home to diverse bat species, providing a unique ecological setting to investigate infection dynamics.
