One hundred and eighty-one cementless total hip arthroplasties with threaded polyethylene acetabular components, carried out between 1980 and 1981, have been reviewed retrospectively. Discrepancy between the complaints of the patients with loose components and destruction of acetabular bone led to the development of a four stage radiological grading system which would enable loosening to be anticipated in routine cases. There was a high percentage of loosening (33%) in our series and direct bone-polyethylene contact gave rise to severe granulomatous reactions around the implants. Strict radiological follow up and early revision surgery is indicated in this type of arthroplasty.

Controlling the distribution of rings on polymer axles, such as α-cyclodextrin (αCD) on polyethylene glycol (PEG), is paramount in imparting robust mechanical properties to slide-ring gels and polyrotaxane-based networks. Previous experiments demonstrated that the functionalization of polymer ends could modulate the coverage of αCDs on PEG. To explore the design rule, we propose a multi-scale framework for predicting αCD assembly on bare and functionalized PEG.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers are contaminated in wastewater from various primary sources, such as washing textile waters. PET fibers in the environment can be degraded into microfibers because of weathering processes such as sunlight, physical wear, and heat. Although recent studies reported adverse effects of PET microfibers on aquatic organisms, the lack of information on their toxicity and mode of action hampers the risk assessment of PET microfibers.

The influx of microplastics (MPs) into the Arctic Ocean poses a collective risk, particularly with pronounced sea ice depletion due to global warming. A total of 73 replicate sediment samples were collected at different depths (38 to 79 m) from Chukchi and the Beaufort Seas at 8 stations in the Arctic region during the R/V Mirai cruise (MR22-06C) from August to September 2022. The average concentration of MPs is 79.
