Photoecological consequence of ozone holes are considered. Analysis of the total UV-radiation intensity and the short-wave edge of atmospheric transmittance depending on ozone content is presented. Characteristic times of some photodamages to skin and eyes have been estimated under ozone content reducing. A role of photosensitizers including drugs in phototoxical effects is discussed. Possible ways of photoprotection are considered.

Associations of Short-Term Ozone Exposure With Hypoxia and Arterial Stiffness.

J Am Coll Cardiol

January 2025

SKL-ESPC & SEPKL-AERM, College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Center for Environment and Health, Peking University, Beijing, China; Research Station of Alpine Ecology Environment and Health at Tibet University, Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, China. Electronic address:

Background: Epidemiological studies reported associations between ozone (O) exposure and cardiovascular diseases, yet the biological mechanisms remain underexplored. Hypoxia is a shared pathogenesis of O-associated diseases; therefore, we hypothesized that O exposure may induce changes in hypoxia-related markers, leading to adverse cardiovascular effects.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate associations of short-term O exposure with hypoxic biomarkers and arterial stiffness.

Background: Air pollution is a significant environmental risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but its impact on African populations is under-researched due to limited air quality data and health studies.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to synthesize available research on the effects of air pollution on CVDs outcomes in African populations, identify knowledge gaps, and suggest areas for research and policy intervention.

Methods: A systematic search of PubMed was conducted using terms capturing criteria ambient air pollutants (for example particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide) and CVDs and countries in Africa.

Clay-catalyzed ozonation of Norfloxacin - Effects of metal cation and degradation rate on aqueous media toxicity towards Lemna minor.

Chemosphere

January 2025

Nanoqam, Department of Chemistry, University of Quebec at Montreal, H3C 3P8, Canada; École de technologie supérieure, Montréal, Québec, H3C 1K3, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Norfloxacin was ozonized in clay suspensions to study its toxicity on Lemna minor, which helps assess antibiotic impact in environments with clay.
  • The study found that norfloxacin causes toxicity in Lemna minor through oxidative stress, worsened by ozonation, affecting growth and chlorophyll levels.
  • Results indicate that the type of clay catalyst and the oxidation process influence the toxicity outcomes, revealing the potential formation of more harmful byproducts from the antibiotic.

Trees growing in urban areas face increasing stress from atmospheric pollutants, with limited attention given to the early responses of young seedlings. This study aimed to address the knowledge gap regarding the effects of simulated pollutant exposure, specifically particulate matter (PM), elevated ozone (O), and carbon dioxide (CO) concentrations, on young seedlings of five tree species: Scots pine ( L.); Norway spruce ( (L.
