Recovery of fertility 14 years following radiotherapy and chemotherapy for testicular tumour.

Clin Oncol (R Coll Radiol)

Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Royal London Hospital, UK.

Published: November 1993

We report a patient who developed a left-sided malignant teratoma with ipsilateral para-aortic nodes at the age of 20 years. Following treatment with left orchidectomy, abdominal and pelvic radiotherapy and chemotherapy, he was found to be azoospermic. More than 14 years after treatment, he regained his fertility. Similar prolonged iatrogenic depression of spermatogenesis has been reported in younger lymphoma patients; however, in post-pubertal patients with testicular tumour this has not been frequently reported.

Background: Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid (PSCCT) has recently been reclassified as a morphologic pattern of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC). Consequently, PSCCT and squamous cell carcinoma with papillary thyroid carcinoma (SCC-PTC) were categorized as ATC. However, in terms of clinical characteristics and overall prognosis, whether PSCCT is similar to SCC-PTC has yet to be sufficiently investigated.

Background: Adding pembrolizumab, an anti-PD-1 antibody approved for treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) to neoadjuvant (induction-) chemotherapy utilizing docetaxel and cisplatin (TP) followed by radiotherapy may improve outcome in larynx organ-preservation (LOP) that is investigated in the European Larynx-Organ preservation Study (ELOS). As biomarkers for response to TP and pembrolizumab +TP are missing but may include cytokines, this work aims on determining cytokines potentially linked to outcome as prognostic markers sufficient to predict and/or monitor response to successful LOP.

Methods: Collagenase IV digests were generated from 47 histopathological confirmed HNSCC tumor samples and seeded in 96-well plates containing pembrolizumab, docetaxel, cisplatin either solely or in binary or ternary combination.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are prevalent globally, with leading incidence and mortality rates among malignant tumors. Despite notable advancements in surgical resection, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, the overall survival rates remain low. Hence, it is imperative to explore alternative approaches that enhance patient outcomes.

To investigate the role of immunotherapy in the overall survival (OS) of gastrointestinal cancer patients who have liver metastases at the time of the primary site cancer diagnosis. Survival outcome was compared between groups with immunotherapy and groups without immunotherapy. Chemoimmunotherapy was associated with improved OS (hazard ratio [HR] 0.
