The deposition of C3b on the surface of zymosan was assessed in inbred strains of mice. Mg(2+)-EGTA plasma from C57Bl/6 and BALB/c mice was incubated with zymosan and deposited C3b was eluted by methylamine. Eluted C3b was detected and quantified by Western blot and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. 3- to 4-fold more C3b was deposited on zymosan incubated with C57Bl/6 plasma than on zymosan incubated with BALB/c plasma (p < 0.01). Data on the kinetics of deposition of C3b suggest a faster and greater activity of the alternative pathway of complement (ACP) in C57Bl/6 than in BALB/c. Higher C3b deposition in C57Bl/6 plasma occurs in the presence of higher plasma factor H concentration (1.3-fold of BALB/c concentration; p < 0.01) and is accompanied by higher factor H deposition on zymosan (3- to 10-fold of BALB/c concentration; p < 0.01). Demonstrable differences in the activity of the proteins of the ACP may provide a biological basis for the genetic variation in innate resistance to infectious organisms observed in inbred strains of mice.

Atherosclerosis risk is elevated in diabetic patients, but the underlying mechanism such as the involvement of macrophages remains unclear. Here, we investigated the underlying mechanism related to the pro-inflammatory activation of macrophages in the development of diabetic atherosclerosis. Bioinformatics tools were used to analyze the macrophage-related transcriptome differences in patients with atherosclerosis and diabetic mice.

Purpose: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm for automated measurements of spinopelvic parameters on lateral radiographs and compare its performance to multiple experienced radiologists and surgeons.
Methods: On lateral full-spine radiographs of 295 consecutive patients, a two-staged region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) was trained to detect anatomical landmarks and calculate thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), sacral slope (SS), and sagittal vertical axis (SVA). Performance was evaluated on 65 radiographs not used for training, which were measured independently by 6 readers (3 radiologists, 3 surgeons), and the median per measurement was set as the reference standard.

Background: This study estimated the cost of providing free maternal and child health (MCH) services at the primary health centre (PHC) level in southeast Nigeria. The costs of providing an essential benefit package of maternal and child health (MCH) services are unknown. Such information is required for optimal resource allocation decisions and for replicating similar programmes in different settings.

Introduction: We assessed the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and associated socio-occupational factors among delivery riders from a Brazilian city at two time points during the pandemic.
Methodology: Surveys for antibody and viral RNA testing were conducted from November 2020 to January 2021, and from March to May 2021 in a group of 117 delivery riders. A questionnaire on socio-occupational characteristics and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) preventive measures was completed.
