The present study was designed to examine the activity of the sodium-independent chloride-bicarbonate anion exchanger and the sodium-proton exchanger in erythrocytes of 30 normotensive and 35 hypertensive subjects and its relation to the previously reported decrease in erythrocyte pH. Erythrocyte cytosolic pH was measured by the pH-sensitive fluorescent probe 2'-7'-bis(2-carboxyethyl)- 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein. The activity of the anion exchanger was determined by acidifying cell pH and measuring the initial rate of the net sodium-independent, 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid-sensitive, bicarbonate influx driven by an outward proton gradient. The activity of the sodium-proton exchanger was determined by acidifying cell pH and measuring the initial rate of the net sodium-dependent proton efflux driven by an outward proton gradient. The activity of the anion exchanger was higher in hypertensive than control individuals (18,863 +/- 1081 vs 15,629 +/- 897 mmol/L cells per hour, P < .05). The activity of the sodium-proton exchanger was higher in hypertensive than control individuals (301 +/- 45 vs 162 +/- 23 mmol/L cells per hour, P < .005). Basal erythrocyte pH was lower in hypertensive than control individuals (7.27 +/- 0.02 vs 7.33 +/- 0.01, mean +/- SEM, P < .05). With the 100% confidence (lower) limit of the normotensive population as a cutoff point, a subgroup of 11 hypertensive patients had an abnormally low erythrocyte pH (< 7.19).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Rib fracture-related infection is a challenging complication of thoracic trauma due to the difficulty of treating it with antibiotics alone and the need for a second operation to remove the infected fixator and sterilize the surrounding infected tissue. In this study, inspired by the photocatalytic performance of and ion release from silver-based materials, including AgPO and AgS, a hybrid AgPO-AgS heterojunction was prepared based on anion exchange and a one-step calcination process to design a nonantibiotic coating aimed at preventing and treating rib fracture-related infection with short-term 808 nm near-infrared irradiation. Calcination at 250 °C enhanced the inductive effect of the phosphate radical and led to the formation of a tight nanoheterogeneous interface between AgPO and AgS, thereby promoting interfacial electron transfer and reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers.

Understanding the arrangement of ionic liquids at the interface and their interactions with the surface is crucial for enhancing selectivity in heterogeneous reactions for practical applications. In this study, we investigate the nature of the adsorption and structural orientations of a sulfonyl-based ionic liquid on platinum-based mono- and bimetallic (111) surfaces employing replica exchange molecular dynamics and first-principles density functional theory calculations. More than 30 confirmations of the ionic liquid are identified on both monometallic and bimetallic surfaces.

Metallofullerenols and fullerenols have attracted attention due to their remarkable ability to interact with various biologically relevant molecules, paving the way for biomedical applications, ranging from medical imaging techniques to drug carriers, acting with increased efficiency and reduced side effects. In this work, we investigated the effects of two fullerene derivatives, Gd@C(OH) and C(OH), on erythrocyte membrane components under oxidative stress conditions induced by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) as a source of peroxyl radicals. The results demonstrated that gadolinium encapsulation within the fullerene cage enhanced the electron affinity of Gd@C(OH), resulting in stronger antioxidant activity.
