Human papillomavirus (HPV) underpins approximately 90% of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the anus and perianal region. These tumors usually arise in association with precursor lesions such anal intraepithelial neoplasia/ high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (AIN 3/ HSIL), whereas a small subset of HPV-negative cancers may harbor mutations in TP53. Recently, vulvar lesions termed differentiated exophytic vulvar intraepithelial lesion/vulvar acanthosis with altered differentiated (DEVIL/VAAD) have been recognized as HPV-independent, TP53 wild-type precursors for vulvar carcinoma; however, analogous anal lesions have not been described.

Complete Sequence and Characterization of Mitochondrial and Chloroplast Genome of CACC 0356.

Life (Basel)

January 2025

Technical Innovation Center for Utilization of Marine Biological Resources, Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, Xiamen 361000, China.

, a marine benthic diatom, holds promise for human nutrition and health as well as for aquaculture applications. However, the scarcity of organelle genome data within the Navicula clade has impeded a comprehensive understanding and utilization of this group. Our research presents a pioneering exploration into the complete mitochondrial and chloroplast genome sequences of CACC 0356, shedding light on its phylogeny and evolutionary history.

Background/objectives: All 11 metallothionein protein-coding genes are located on human chromosome 16q13. It is unique among human genetics to have an entire pathway's genes clustered in a short chromosomal region. Since solid tumors, particularly high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC), exhibit high rates of monoallelic aneuploidy, this region is commonly lost.

Construction of the cancer patients' database based on the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) datasets for cancer epidemiology research.

BMC Med Res Methodol

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University College of Medicine, 1, Singil-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, 07441, South Korea.

Background: The US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset does not include a specific question or laboratory test to confirm a history of cancer diagnosis. However, if straightforward variables for cancer history are introduced, US NHANES could be effectively utilized in future cancer epidemiology studies. To address this gap, the authors developed a cancer patient database from the US NHANES datasets by employing multiple R programming codes.

Objective: Smartphones and wearable devices can be effective tools to objectively assess patient mobility and well-being before and after spine surgery. In this retrospective observational study, the authors investigated the relationship between these longitudinal perioperative patient activity data and socioeconomic and demographic correlates, assessing whether smartphone-captured metrics may allow neurosurgeons to distinguish intergroup patterns.

Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective study of patients who underwent spinal decompression with and without fusion between 2017 and 2021 was conducted.
