The role of Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) virus in calves born with congenital brain abnormalities in western, southern and southeastern parts of Anatolia was investigated. 639 blood serum samples collected from cows which had aborted or given birth to calves with congenital abnormalities, from their offspring and from clinically healthy animals out of the above mentioned regions were tested for the presence of BVD antibodies. Additionally BVD virus isolation was performed with material obtained from cows which had aborted or given birth to calves with congenital abnormalities and from their offspring. Out of 639 blood sera 203 (31.7%) were found serologically positive, and from samples of 30 animals tested by direct immunofluorescence technique 13 (7 cows and 6 calves) BVD virus carriers could be demonstrated. The findings reveal that BVD virus infections might be a cause of malformations found in these calves born with congenital abnormalities of the central nervous system.

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is caused by the BVD virus (BVDV) and has been reported worldwide in cattle. To estimate BVDV circulation among cattle where few BVD cases were reported in southern Japan, 1910 serum samples collected from 35 cattle farms without a BVD outbreak were investigated to detect antibodies against BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 using an indicator virus with a cytopathogenic effect and the luciferase gene, respectively. Neutralizing antibodies against BVDV-1 and BVDV-2 were detected more frequently in 18 vaccinated farms than in 17 nonvaccinated farms.

Azulene-1,3-bis(semicarbazone), , and azulene-1,3-bis(thiosemicarbazone), , were synthesized by the acid-catalyzed condensation reactions of semicarbazide and thiosemicarbazide, respectively, with azulene-1,3-dicarboxaldehyde in stoichiometric amounts. Compounds and were identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry and characterized by IR, H-NMR, C-NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. Crystal structure determination of azulene-1,3-bis(thiosemicarbazone) shows that the thiosemicarbazone units exhibit a -closed conformation, with both arms oriented in the same direction and adopting an configuration with respect to the imine linkages.
