Homologous sequences between EDS-76 adenovirus strain 127 DNA and bovine adenovirus DNA were found by the Southern blotting technique and no homology with CELO virus DNA could be detected. These data suggest a genetic similarity between EDS-76 virus and bovine adenoviruses. The fragments generated form EDS-76 adenovirus DNA by eight restriction endonucleases were physically mapped.

Egg Drop Syndrome 76 in a U.S. Broiler Breeder Flock.

Avian Dis

September 2024

Gaydos Technical Services, LLC, Dallas, TX 75215.

A four-house broiler breeder farm of approximately 35-wk-old hens was diagnosed with egg drop syndrome (EDS'76) utilizing PCR and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) testing. Based on communication with local practitioners, the geographic area near where this flock was located had numerous EDS'76 cases in table egg layers at the time of diagnosis. An egg production drop was seen in the broiler breeder flock over a 7-day period, which prompted an investigation.

Article Synopsis
  • Egg drop syndrome (EDS) is a viral disease in poultry that causes significant economic losses, primarily affecting laying hens due to an adenovirus that can spread both horizontally and vertically.
  • This study evaluated EDS virus infection in various cell cultures (duck embryo fibroblasts and specific pathogen-free embryos) and determined how well the virus proliferates in these environments compared to duck and chicken eggs.
  • Findings indicate that EDS virus grows better in duck embryo fibroblast cells and duck eggs than in chicken embryo fibroblasts, suggesting that duck cell cultures are a more suitable option for producing avian adenovirus EDS-76.

Egg Drop Syndrome-76 (EDS-76) is a recognized disease of chickens and Japanese Quails, which is of high economic importance due to its drastic negative effects on egg production in laying birds. The aim of the present study was to better understand the EDS-76 viral disease process in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica), since very limited studies have been conducted in this species of birds. For this purpose, an experimental study was conducted with infection of EDS-76 virus in laying Japanese quails to reveal pathology, effect on egg production/quality and immune responses of this virus in these birds.

Article Synopsis
  • * The CPA assay is designed to identify all FAdV serotypes (1-8a-8b-11) and can differentiate specific serotypes by varying incubation temperatures, showing distinct patterns in gel electrophoresis.
  • * Compared to real-time PCR, the CPA method is equally sensitive, targeting low concentrations of the virus, but is faster and cheaper, making it a promising tool for accurate FAdV detection.

To determine if egg drop syndrome 76 virus infection is among the causes of lowered egg productivity in commercial poultry farms in South Eastern Part of Nigeria and to know the prevalence of the infection, ten farms with history of lowered egg production in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State were randomly selected. Sera from ten hens in each of the selected farms were assayed for antibodies against EDS 76 virus by the haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test. The mean HI titre of the ten hens in each of the farms was recorded as EDS - 76 antibody titre for the farm.
