To study the effects of bacteria on net absorption of fluid and electrolytes in the small intestine of newly weaned pigs, a more comprehensive and ethical alternative to the ligated loop test was developed. Five paired segments, located at 10, 25, 50, 75 and 95 per cent sites along the small intestine, were cannulated at both ends and solutions perfused continuously through the segments for 10 hours. Net absorption was determined by both a volume method and a method using a non-absorbable marker. Net absorption of fluid, sodium, potassium and chloride was significantly less in segments infected with an enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli than in control segments. This method was superior to the ligated loop test because (i) it was performed entirely under anaesthesia, (ii) the small intestine did not distend during a test, (iii) net absorption was determined per cm2 and along the whole length of the small intestine. Net absorption determined by the nonabsorbable marker was significantly less than that determined by the volume method.

Kinetics of reformation of the S state capable of progressing to the S state after the O release by photosystem II.

The active site for water oxidation in photosystem II (PSII) comprises a MnCaO cluster adjacent to a redox-active tyrosine residue (Tyr). During the water-splitting process, the enzyme transitions through five sequential oxidation states (S to S), with O evolution occurring during the STyr· to STyr transition. Chloride also plays a role in this mechanism.

Photocatalytic technology for removing organic dye pollutants has gained considerable attention because of its ability to harness abundant solar energy without requiring additional chemical reagents. In this context, YF spheres doped with Yb, Er, Tm (YF) are synthesized using a hydrothermal method and are subsequently coated with a layer of graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) with Au nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed onto the surface to create a core-shell structure, designated as YF: Yb, Er, Tm@CN-Au (abbreviated as YF@CN-Au). The core-shell composites demonstrate remarkable stability, broadband absorption, and exceptional photocatalytic activity across the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR) spectral range.

The line list is essential for accurately modeling various astrophysical phenomena, such as stellar photospheres and atmospheres of extrasolar planets. This paper introduces a new line database for the PS molecule spanning from the ultraviolet to the infrared regions, covering wavenumbers up to 45000 cm and containing over ten million transitions between 150,458 states with total angular momentum J < 160. Accurate line intensities for rotational, vibrational and electronic transitions are generated by using the general purpose variational code DUO.

Background: The carbon sequestration potential and water retention capacity of peatlands are closely linked to the growth dynamics of Sphagnum mosses. However, few studies have focused on the response of Sphagnum moss growth dynamics to UV-B radiation, and existing research has emphasized species differences. In this study, Sphagnum palustre L.
