Using an in vitro technique the ability of the Fe/Transferrin complex in the serum of calories and proteins in chronically deprived adult males was investigated. The study included the behavior of the same function in the sera of other types of anemias. A significant reduction of the Fe donating capacity was found in the sera of patients suffering from nutritional anemia (NA), whereas this change was absent in the sera of other type of anemias. A deterioration of the iron donating function of the Fe/Transferrin complex caused by malnutrition, is postulated. The participation of this alteration in the production of NA is considered.

An electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) method was used to determine the concentration of the antitumor agent Triapine in BEAS-2B cells when Triapine was bound to iron (Fe). Knowledge of the concentration of Fe-Triapine in tumor cells may be useful to adjust the administration of the drug or to adjust iron uptake in tumor cells. An EPR spectrum is obtained for Fe(3+)-Triapine, Fe(3+)(Tp), in BEAS-2B cells after addition of Fe(3+)(Tp).

Background: The bacteriostatic activity of the transferrin family has been known since the early 1960's. The possession of high affinity iron(III)-binding sites and the existence of a specific membrane-bound receptor, have led to the present understanding of serum transferrin acting as the major iron transporter between cells in vertebrate systems. Iron chelators can interact with transferrin, either by directly donating iron or by removing iron from the protein; both interactions have relevance for haematology.

We report for the first time the absolute quantification of a metalloprotein separated by nondenaturing gel electrophoresis (GE) using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in combination with species-specific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). The proposed method is based on the use of an isotopically enriched (57)Fe-transferrin complex to quantify natural transferrin (Tf) in human serum samples. First, the saturation process of Tf with natural abundance or isotopically enriched (57)Fe was accomplished by using freshly synthesized Fe-citrate solutions.

Anthracyclines are effective anticancer agents. However, their use is limited by cardiotoxicity, an effect linked to their ability to chelate iron and to perturb iron metabolism (Mol Pharmacol 68:261-271, 2005). These effects on iron-trafficking remain poorly understood, but they are important to decipher because treatment for anthracycline cardiotoxicity uses the chelator, dexrazoxane.

Transferrin was isolated and purified from bovine plasma. An intestinal segment in situ experiment showed that 19.2% of injected iron was absorbed when FeCl(3) (80 microg Fe/ml) was injected into a duodenum segment of iron-deficient rats.
