Aim: To investigate the effects of anti-human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) antibody positivity on early hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) results in patients with thalassemia major (TM).

Methods: One hundred and twenty-four HLA-matched HSCTs were performed in patients with TM between 2015 and 2022. Ninety-one patients were screened for anti-HLA antibodies by testing panel reactive antigens (PRA).

Although relatively rare among transfusion reactions, transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a life-threatening condition, making its prevention, recognition, and early intervention extremely important. Although many etiological factors have been identified, the most common reasons are anti-human leukocyte antigen (anti-HLA) and anti-human neutrophil antigen antibodies that pass from the donor to the recipient during transfusion. TRALI was shown with transfusion of all kinds of blood products, however, it is rarely seen after stem cell infusion.

Background: The lack of evidence regarding optimal desensitization strategies for lung transplant candidates with preformed donor specific anti-human leukocyte antigen antibodies (DSAs) has led to varying approaches among centers towards this patient group. Our institution's desensitization protocol for recipients with preformed DSAs and negative flow cytometry crossmatch (FCXM) consists of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) as the sole therapy. The study aimed to determine outcomes using this approach.

The introduction of combined anti-retroviral therapy (cART) in 1996, along with a continual breakthrough in anti-human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) drugs, has improved the life expectancies of HIV-1-infected individuals. However, the incidence of drug-resistant viruses between individuals undergoing cART and treatment-naïve individuals is a common challenge. Therefore, there is a requirement to explore potential drug targets by considering various stages of the viral life cycle.

Elevated Selenoprotein P Levels in Thalassemia Major Patients.

Arch Med Res

July 2022

Department of Pediatric Hematology, Faculty of Medicine, Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey. Electronic address:

Introduction: Previous studies have measured selenium levels and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3) activity in patients with thalassemia major (TM). However, Selenoprotein P (SEPP), which is responsible for the storage and transport of selenium, has not been studied in thalassemia patients. This study aims to correlate thyroid functions of TM patients with their SEPP and GPX3 levels.
