Painful thyroiditis in postpartum period.

Med J Malaysia

Published: March 1993

Destructive thyroiditis commonly occurs during the postpartum period, with a prevalence rate of 5% to 16%, and is mainly due to postpartum autoimmune thyroiditis (PPT) and, very rarely, to subacute thyroiditis. The thyroiditis is similar to Hashimoto's thyroiditis and is generally painless in nature, although cases with painful thyroiditis have been described. We report a case of painful destructive thyroiditis occurring during the postpartum period, which was clinically and biochemically indistinguishable from the variant of painful PPT or subacute thyroiditis. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed multi-nucleated giant cells diagnostic of subacute thyroiditis.

Background Obesity is postulated to be a high-risk factor for thrombosis along with the inherent hypercoagulability of pregnancy. The Confidential Review of Maternal Deaths (CRMD) found that thrombosis was one of the major causes of maternal deaths in Kerala. This study investigates the major risk factor - obesity and its association with thrombosis in our study setting, along with other risk factors.

Introduction: The hemolysis-elevated liver enzymes-low platelet counts (HELLP) syndrome and posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) are rare conditions that can complicate pregnancy and the early postpartum period. Although both are closely related to hypertensive pregnancy disorders, their association is rarely described, so the outcome of these patients remains unknown. We present a case report of PRES associated with HELLP syndrome and a review of all previously published cases, including demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome.

Can fecal characteristics be used to predict the digestibility of certain macro minerals in dry and lactating cows?

Anim Sci J

January 2025

Department of Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ataturk University, Erzurum, Turkiye.

This study aims to evaluate the relationship between mineral digestibility and fecal characteristics and compare digestibility in dry and late-lactating cows. A total of 107 multiparous Holstein and Simmental cows were included, with 66 cows in late lactation and 41 cows in the dry period. The apparent digestibility of key macro minerals, dry matter content in feces, dirtiness scores, fecal characteristics, and serum macro mineral levels were determined.

Ethnic and racial discrimination in maternal health care in Mexico: a neglected challenge in the search for universal health coverage.

Center for Health Equity in Latin America, Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Tulane University, Louisiana, USA.

Background: Ethnic and racial discrimination in maternal health care has been overlooked in academic literature and yet it is critical for achieving universal health coverage (UHC). There is a lack of empirical evidence on its impact on the effective coverage of maternal health interventions (ECMH) for Indigenous women in Mexico. Documenting progress in reducing maternal health inequities, particularly given the disproportionate impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on ethnic minorities, is essential to improving equity in health systems.

Background & Aims: The developmental origin of health and disease hypothesis shows that early adverse exposures can have lifelong health effects. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the impact of choline intake during pregnancy and/or lactation on gene expression profiles in the liver of 24-day-old male rat offspring from dams with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Methods: Phenotypic characteristic, histological examination and global transcriptome pattern of liver tissue specimens obtained from offspring of dams suffering from fatty liver, provided with proper choline intake during pregnancy and lactation (NN), fed a choline-deficient diet during both periods (DD), deprived of choline only during pregnancy (DN), or only during lactation (ND), was performed.
