Allergy to Alternaria. II. Diagnostic comparison of skin-tests and RAST.

Published: August 1993

The diagnosis of Alternaria allergy is difficult and tests in vivo and in vitro usually do not give results as satisfactory as those obtained with other allergens. We studied 33 patients with a cutaneous response of 2 mm2 or more to skin-prick tests for Alternaria (extract containing 104 micrograms/ml of Alt-1). Results were compared with those of RAST. Skin tests were positive in 75.8% of cases (the resulting papule was the same size as or larger than that elicited by 10 mg/ml histamine) and negative in 24.2% of cases. RAST was positive in 75% of cases and negative in 25%. There was no significant difference in the frequencies. RAST was positive four times more often in males than in females; when these figures were corrected for population data, the ratio was 2:1. The coefficient of correlation between the intensity of skin-test and RAST results was r = 0.51 (p < 0.05). These findings are evaluated and results are discussed.

Modeling ethanol/water adsorption in all-silica zeolites using the real adsorbed solution theory.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Massachusetts Amherst, 686 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, Massachusetts 01003-9303, USA.

A comprehensive set of single-component and binary isotherms were collected for ethanol/water adsorption into the siliceous forms of 185 known zeolites using grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Using these data, a systematic analysis of ideal/real adsorbed-solution theory (IAST/RAST) was conducted and activity coefficients were derived for ethanol/water mixtures adsorbed in different zeolites based on RAST. It was found that activity coefficients of ethanol are close to unity while activity coefficients of water are larger in most zeolites, indicating a positive excess free energy of the mixture.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurophysiological studies on psychosis often overlook how individual ERP scores vary over time, which might lead to missing important insights about the condition.
  • This study analyzed ERP data from 162 patients with psychosis and 178 non-psychotic individuals to assess differences in variability of specific ERPs.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in variability across most ERPs between the groups, but patients with schizophrenia showed greater MMN variability, particularly related to certain symptoms.

  • Rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (rAST) from blood cultures is crucial for selecting effective antibiotics for bloodstream infections, with the LifeScale system offering a promising new approach.
  • LifeScale utilizes microfluidic sensors and mechanical resonators to quickly analyze individual microbes and deliver reliable rAST results in under 5 hours, outpacing standard methods.
  • Notably, LifeScale addresses challenges with polymicrobial cultures and shows strong agreement with the current standard of care, potentially allowing for quicker clinical decision-making without the need for confirmatory tests.

Introduction: To speed up antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) proposed rapid AST (RAST), a disk diffusion method to be read after 4, 6 and 8 hours of incubation. We investigated the feasibility of implementation of RAST in a non-automated lab setting.

Materials & Methods: To this end, reference strains as well as a variety of clinical and resistant strains were used to spike sterile hemocultures (BioMérieux BACT/ALERT 3D® and Becton Dickinson BACTEC FX® systems), followed by RAST in comparison to classical long-incubation AST.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study of 86 ITP patients and 78 healthy controls, findings showed that ITP patients had significantly slower clot lysis times and higher levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), while tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) levels were lower.
  • * The results suggest that prolonged clot lysis time (CLT) and altered fibrinolysis mechanisms in ITP may contribute to thrombosis risk, with specifically higher tPA-PAI-1 complexes indicating potential
