Objective: We examined the effects of L-thyroxine therapy versus placebo over a 12-month period on volume of solitary thyroid nodules.

Design: Prospective randomized clinical trial; placebo and control groups followed for one year in three centres.

Patients: One hundred and one euthyroid patients with single palpable colloid thyroid nodules.

Measurements: Serum thyroid hormones, TSH, thyroglobulin, anti-thyroglobulin and anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies measured at the first visit and after 2, 6 and 12 months; nodule volume and contralateral thyroid lobe thickness measured by ultrasound in double blind fashion; nodule diameter measured by palpation every 6 months.

Results: In the treatment group the nodule volume measured by ultrasound decreased progressively but not significantly; in the placebo group no changes were demonstrated. The number of nodules which decreased in size was however significantly larger in the treatment group. None of the initial parameters was predictive for the response. In the treatment group the nodule size assessed by palpation showed a significant decrease after 12 months when compared to baseline.

Conclusions: In non-endemic areas TSH suppression induces nodule volume reduction measured by ultrasound which, although not significant, seems to be progressive and occurring only in a subgroup of patients. Significant palpatory nodule reduction is probably related to decreased thickness of the surrounding thyroid tissue still responsive to TSH.

Non-invasive assessment of pulmonary nodule malignancy remains a critical challenge in lung cancer diagnosis. Traditional methods often lack precision in differentiating benign from malignant nodules, particularly in the early stages. This study introduces an approach using multifractal spectrum analysis to quantitatively evaluate pulmonary nodule characteristics.

Introduction: To analyze the impact of Kirsten-Rat-Sarcoma Virus (KRAS) mutations on tumor-growth as estimated by tumor-doubling-time (TDT) among solid-dominant clinical-stage I lung adenocarcinoma. Moreover, to evaluate the prognostic role of KRAS mutations, TDT and their combination in completely-resected pathologic-stage I adenocarcinomas.

Methods: In this single-center retrospective analysis, completely resected clinical-stage I adenocarcinomas presenting as solid-dominant nodules (consolidation-to-tumor ratio > 0.

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an emerging treatment option for small, low-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety profiles of RFA for primary T1a vs. T1b PTC.

With technological development, ionizing radiation has found applications in numerous occupations. However, the determination and quantification of the damage resulting from exposure to it remains rather unclear, along with the damage to particular organs. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the relationship between low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) in exposed workers and possible functional changes and cancer development in the thyroid gland.

Objectives: Thermal ablation (TA) is an alternative to lobectomy for thyroid nodules (TNs). While it is believed that thyroid function remains stable after TA for cystic TNs, the impact of TA on solid TNs, especially the large ones, is less explored. This study investigates changes in thyroid hormones after TA in patients with solid-predominant TNs and identifies potential risk factors for thyroid dysfunction after TA.
