The effects of intraaortic balloon pumping (IABP) on portal venous flow were assessed using color Doppler echography. A total of 23 heart failure patients treated with IABP were assessed. Balloon inflation was timed to occur with every other cardiac contraction. The maximum, minimum, and mean flow velocity (Vmax, Vmin and Vmean, respectively) in the right portal vein were measured with the IABP ON and OFF, and the values compared. The Vmin with IABP ON and OFF was the same (11 +/- 5 cm/sec), whereas the difference between Vmax and Vmean was small for each patient. The velocities measured with IABP ON were larger than or equal to those with IABP OFF in all cases, however, except one. Thus, Vmax (22 +/- 8 cm/sec) and Vmean (17 +/- 6 cm/sec) with IABP ON were significantly larger (p 0.01) than those with IABP OFF (20 +/- 7 cm/sec and 16 +/- 6 cm/sec, respectively). The flow pattern of the portal vein was characteristically pulsatile either with IABP ON or OFF in most cases.

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is recognized globally, but little is known about affected Hispanic populations. In partnership with Dominican Republic, a Hispanic Caribbean Island with a large SCA population, a TCD screening program provided hydroxyurea to children with conditional velocities. Building local capacity, ten Dominican medical graduates were certified in TCD examinations and trained in hydroxyurea management.

Background: Declining gait performance is seen in aging individuals, due to neural and systemic factors. Plasma biomarkers provide an accessible way to assess evolving brain changes; non-specific neurodegeneration (NfL, GFAP) or evolving Alzheimer's disease (Aβ 42/40 ratio, P-Tau181).
Methods: In a population-based cohort of older adults, we evaluate the hypothesis that plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's Disease pathology are associated with worse gait performance.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate with ultrasonography (US) the location of GPF, the course of the GPA, and to measure palatal fibromucosa thickness.
Materials And Methods: This in vivo experiment was conducted on a group of healthy, young Turkish subjects. Using the US, the localization of the GPF, its diameter and opening type, maximum flow velocity (Vmax) and collateral branches (CB) of the GPA, and the thickness of the palatine mucosa were evaluated.
The present study demonstrates the significance of the C/N ratio and double helical ribbon (DHR) impeller in the anaerobic co-digestion (AnCo-D) of sugar refining process (SRP) effluent and molasses-based distillery spent wash (DSW) for improved biogas production. Both SRP & DSW were mixed in different percentages to achieve an optimum C/N ratio. Further biomethane potential analysis of mixed feeds with different C/N ratios was performed.

Hawthorn leave flavonoids (HLF) are widely used as an herb or dietary supplements for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. However, its gastrointestinal absorption behavior and mechanism have not been disclosed. In this study, gastrointestinal absorption and its regulation of 4''-O-glucosylvitexin (GLV), 2''-O-rhamnosylvitexin (RHV), vitexin (VIT), rutin (RUT) and hyperoside (HP) in HLF were investigated using in vitro, in situ and in vivo models.
