Single treatment of metallised food packaging plastics waste (MFPW) has shown disappointing results with recycling rate <20 % due to its complex structure consisting of 10 % aluminium (Al) and 90 % mixed plastic films made of PE, PP, PS, PET, etc. Besides, it is generating many emissions and residues that must be landfilled making it difficult to integrate them into the circular economy. Therefore, a multi-stage recycling (MSR) approach has recently been developed using several sequential mechanical, thermal and chemical processes to recover energy and Al from MFPW with additional revenue for recycling plant operators.

This research aims to study the effect of aluminum (Al) leaching pre-treatment on the catalytic pyrolysis of metallised food packaging plastics waste (MFPW). The experiments started with removal of Al from MFPW using leaching process to prepare Al-free mixed plastic waste (MPW). The catalytic pyrolysis of MPW over ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst was carried out using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis coupled with FTIR, while GC-MS was used to observe the compounds of the volatile products.

The study demonstrates that embedment of copper particles into thermoplastic polymers (polymers) using cold spray technology is an effective deterrent against fouling organisms. Two polymers, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and nylon were metallised with copper powder using cold spray technology. After 250 days in the field, Cu-embedded HDPE and copper plate controls were completely free of hard foulers compared to Cu-embedded nylon and polymer controls which were heavily fouled with both soft and hard fouling.

The thermal protection offered by lightweight survival systems was evaluated in a mountain environment. When subjects were exposed for 3 h in bags manufactured from polythene, in metallised plastic sheeting, and in a casualty bag incorporating MPS, no significant differences in thermal benefit were found. The protection offered by each system was comparable and the practical experience gained in the field would suggest that the simple polythene bag was superior to the MPS bag when one considers strength, durability, multiplicity of roles, and cheapness.
