Background: Although the prognostic implications of severe mitral regurgitation (MR) are well recognised, they are less clear in moderate MR. We therefore explored the prognostic impact of both moderate and severe MR within the large National Echocardiography Database Australia cohort.

Methods: Echocardiography reports from 608 570 individuals were examined using natural language processing to identify MR severity and leaflet pathology.

Background: The management of ventricular septal defect (VSD) alongside mitral regurgitation (MR) in pediatric patients remains a contentious issue due to the intricacies of cardiac surgery and the need to minimize ischemic time. Despite observations of MR regression following VSD closure, definitive guidelines for this patient subset are lacking, particularly concerning the management of the subgroup of patients with moderate MR. The objective of the study is to explore the factors influencing the choice between surgical intervention and conservative management for the mitral valve (MV) in VSD patients with moderate MR.

Background: The prevalence of severe calcific mitral stenosis (MS) is higher in female patients. The aim of the study was to assess the sex-related differences in clinical characteristics and prognosis in patients with severe calcific MS.

Methods: Among 7154 adult patients with MS due to mitral annular calcification who underwent echocardiography between October 2010 and August 2020, 287 patients with severe MS were retrospectively analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • * Postmortem examinations showed that the manatee suffered from various health issues, including aortic stenosis, left ventricular hypertrophy, and a plastic bag lodged in its esophagus, alongside cold stress symptoms.
  • * Blood tests indicated systemic inflammation and potential coagulation problems, while heart-related findings included severe cardiac abnormalities; however, the exact cause of these cardiovascular issues remains undetermined.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the diagnosis and treatment of valvular heart disease (VHD) in Korea, focusing on adult patients with moderate to severe cases through echocardiography in 45 hospitals.
  • - Out of 4,094 patients, about 1,482 had severe VHD, with varied rates of intervention depending on the type of valve issue, highlighting significant in-hospital mortality, especially for secondary severe mitral regurgitation (9.0%).
  • - The findings reveal a 5.4% overall in-hospital mortality rate, with lower mortality in patients who underwent surgical or transcatheter interventions compared to those receiving conservative treatment, suggesting the need for improved VHD management strategies in the future.
