Fifteen cases of ulnar nerve neuropathy at cubital tunnel level were observed in women aged between 16 and 37 years employed in shoe factories. The women operated column sewing machines resting their elbows on the work table. Past evidence showed that the interval between the beginning of work and onset of neuropathy was generally more than one year but less than that for similar diseases observed in other jobs where arthritis of the elbow played a more important role and the average age was higher. It can therefore be supposed that arthritis in these shoes workers was of less significance, whereas local trauma, which was not prevented by the use of small soft cushions under the elbows (4 out of the 15 subjects had been using them for some time), seemed of greater importance. A period of less than one year (in one case only a few days) was deemed due to the presence of a pre-existing neuropathy of the elbow which had so far been asymptomatic. Cases treated within six months of onset showed marked improvement. However, rapidly worsening symptoms, independent of the degree of damage reached, often led to early treatment with favourable outcome in a short time, while slow and insidious onset brought a longer prognosis. The primary prevention suggested is to instruct workers as to the correct work posture, i.e., avoiding resting the elbows on the work table. As a secondary preventive measure, bearing in mind the need of early diagnosis and treatment, medical check-ups every six months are proposed.

A Rare Case of Elbow Synovial Cyst with Radial Nerve Compression.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taipei 116, Taiwan.

Elbow synovial cysts are rare and can mimic more frequently encountered disorders such as lateral epicondylitis, presenting diagnostic challenges. This report describes a woman in her mid-40s with persistent pain and weakness in her right forearm due to a synovial cyst compressing the radial nerve at the Arcade of Frohse. Despite initial suspicions of lateral epicondylitis, deeper investigation using sonography confirmed the presence of a compressive synovial cyst.

Purpose: Our goal was to determine the association between the severity of electrodiagnostic (EDX) studies with the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel using diagnostic ultrasound. Based on our clinical experience, we hypothesized there would not be a positive correlation between the severity of EDX and ulnar nerve CSA.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of patients 18 years or older evaluated from May 1, 2020, to June 31, 2021, referred for an upper limb EDX and neuromuscular ultrasound to evaluate for an upper limb neuropathy.

Background: Free functional muscle transfer (FFMT) for brachial plexus injury (BPI) requires adequate donor arterial flow for successful anastomosis. However, concomitant BPI and subclavian artery injury are not uncommon. Arteriovenous (AV) loop graft is one of the methods used to extend vessels to areas with vascular depletion.

Objective: To evaluate the Neuropathy Score-Reporting and Data System (NS-RADS) MRI grading system in conjunction with electrodiagnostic (EDx) testing for radial neuropathy at the elbow.

Materials And Methods: Patients presenting between 2010 and 2023 with suspected radial neuropathy who underwent both EDx testing in the form of electromyography and nerve conduction studies and MRI within a 12-month period were evaluated. Three blinded radiologists used the NS-RADS grading system to evaluate nerve entrapment (E grades), muscle denervation (M grades) proximally within the supinator/extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB), and more distally within the forearm extensor muscles.

Concentric Needle Electromyography Findings in Patients with Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow.

NeuroSci

December 2024

Institute of Clinical Neurophysiology, Division of Neurology, University Medical Center Ljubljana, Zaloška cesta 7, 1525 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

In ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), the degree of neuropathic changes, the sensitivity of needle electromyography (EMG) in individual ulnar muscles, and the utility of individual EMG parameters are controversial. I compared qualitative needle EMG findings in two ulnar-innervated hands muscles and two ulnar-innervated forearm muscles in a group of previously reported UNE patients. Altogether, 170 UNE patients (175 arms) were studied.
