The aim of our study was to determine the influence of ambient lighting conditions on the diagnostic performance when using digital reporting work-stations. We acquired 15 normal and 30 fractured porcine femurs using a storage phosphor system. All images were demonstrated on a high-quality image display under optimised (128 lx) and non-optimised (450 lx) ambient lighting conditions and on a conventional viewing-box under non-optimised conditions (450 lx). Results were analysed using ROC-statistics. The area under the ROC-curve was 0.895 for optimised conditions and 0.684 for non-optimised conditions using digital displays and 0.849 for the conventional viewing-box. The difference in diagnostic performance between optimised and non-optimised conditions using a digital display was highly significant (p < 0.001). Our results emphasise the importance of adequate surrounding lighting conditions for radiologic diagnostic performance, particularly for the use of digital reporting consoles.

Due to the sulfur's atoms' propensity to form molecules and/or polymeric chains of various sizes and configuration, elemental sulfur possesses more allotropes and polymorphs than any other element at ambient conditions. This variability of the starting building blocks is partially responsible for its rich and fascinating phase diagram, with pressure and temperature changing the states of sulfur from insulating molecular rings and chains to semiconducting low- and high-density amorphous configurations to incommensurate superconducting metallic atomic phase. Here, using a fast compression technique, we demonstrate that the rapid pressurisation of liquid sulfur can effectively break the molecular ring structure, forming a glassy polymeric state of pure-chain molecules (Am-S).

Oxygen vacancy-rich defective tungsten oxide (WO) modified by Prussian blue for efficient photocatalytic carbon dioxide conversion and tetracycline degradation.

J Colloid Interface Sci

December 2024

Laboratory of Alternative Energy Conversion Systems, Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Thessaly, Pedion Areos 38834, Greece. Electronic address:

The coupling of carbon dioxide (CO) with epoxides to produce cyclic carbonates is a desirable decarbonization approach, but its commercial applicability is still restricted by the costly catalysts required, as well as the need for high temperature and high pressure. Herein, oxygen vacancy-rich defective tungsten oxide (WO) rich in Lewis acid sites was modified by Prussian blue (PB), and the obtained composite reaches up to 94 % styrene carbonate yield (171 mmol gh) at ambient temperature and pressure, exhibiting outstanding advantages in the photocatalytic CO cycloaddition reaction compared with currently reported photocatalysts. It is found that the introduction of PB with photothermal properties significantly enhances the capability of WO to absorb and activate CO and epoxide, along with its light utilization ability.

Background: Despite the availability of antivenom, not all snakebite victims choose to seek allopathic care. This choice of care is likely to be determined by unexplored personal and external factors. We studied the factors influencing the choice of treatment and first aid measures among snakebite victims.

In vivo Comparison of Resin Infiltration Outcomes Under Different Light Conditions - a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

J Dent

December 2024

Clinical Research, Dental-Material Gesellschaft mbH, Elbgaustraße 248, 22547, Hamburg, Germany; Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology, LMU Klinikum, Goethestraße 70, 80336, Munich, Germany. Electronic address:

Objective: Success of resin infiltration for the masking of MIH-lesions remains difficult to predict, prompting suggestions to adjust the treatment protocol. This exploratory in vivo study aims to evaluate whether monitoring the resin infiltration process using transmitted light, compared to ambient light, enables a better estimation of when the infiltration process is completed, and to assess how the treatment success, i.e.

Single GAF domain phytochrome exhibits a pH-dependent shunt on the millisecond timescale.

Chemphyschem

Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, Max von Laue-Straße 7, 60438, Frankfurt am Main, GERMANY.

The light-sensing activity of phytochromes is based on the reversible light-induced switching between two isomerization states of the bilin chromophore. These photo-transformations may not necessarily be only unidirectional, but could potentially branch back to the initial ground state in a thermally driven process termed shunt. Such shunts have been rarely reported, and thus our understanding of this process and its governing factors are limited.
