Although the CS preexposure effect in CTA was once viewed exclusively as an acquisition failure, recent studies have suggested that the latent inhibition phenomenon is the result of retrieval impairment. This interpretive challenge is based on the unexpected finding that recovery of the aversion occurs over a long retention interval following conditioning (Kraemer, Lariviere, & Spear, Animal Learning and Behavior, 16, 185-190, 1988; Bakner, Strohen, Nordeen, & Riccio, Physiology & Behavior, 50, 1269-1272, 1991). This study examined whether a similar recovery occurs after US preexposure. Following preexposure to the US (LiCl), rats received a sucrose-illness pairing and were subsequently tested after either short or long training-to-test intervals. In contrast to the findings with the CS preexposure effect, US-preexposed subjects did not show a spontaneous increase in CTA following the long retention interval.

This study reports on the description of children's distinct trajectories of intrusive grief, baseline predictors of grief trajectories, and the association of grief trajectories with mental health, substantive abuse and disordered grief six and fifteen years following baseline assessment. The study uses data on 244 parentally-bereaved children ages 8-16 at baseline. Four distinct trajectories were identified using Growth Mixture Modeling over four waves of assessment across 6 years.

Emotional intensity can produce both optimal and suboptimal effects on learning and memory. While emotional events tend to be better remembered, memory performance can follow an inverted U-shaped curve with increasing intensity. The strength of Pavlovian conditioning tends to increase linearly with the intensity of the aversive outcome, but leads to greater stimulus generalization.

Exposure therapy is an efficient treatment for pathological anxiety, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Prediction error models suggest that optimizing the violation of threat-related expectancies improves treatment outcomes, however, causal evidence is still sparse. The aim of the current study was therefore to provide causal evidence for the influence of the extent of expectancy violations on extinction retention using a novel virtual reality fear conditioning paradigm.

Ketamine is a noncompetitive N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist with antidepressant, anxiolytic, and memory effects in clinical and preclinical studies. The present studies investigated the behavioral effects of ketamine in animals exposed to a consummatory successive negative contrast (cSNC) task involving unexpected reward downshift, negative emotion (frustration), and aversive memory. Food-restricted male rats had 5-min access to 32 % sucrose in each of 10 preshift sessions followed by 4 % sucrose in 4 postshift sessions.
