The existence of new thionin variants in Viscum album has been deduced from cDNA sequences. Unlike the viscotoxins and related thionins previously found in different members of the Viscaceae, these novel thionins contain eight rather than six cysteine residues. In this respect they resemble thionins described previously from various cereals and from Pyrularia pubera, which also contain eight cysteine residues at identical positions. All of the new thionins of V. album are encoded as higher-molecular-weight precursors consisting of a signal peptide, a thionin domain and an acidic polypeptide domain. While the deduced amino acid sequences of the thionin domains of different precursor molecules are highly divergent, the two other domains are conserved among all of the variants and are distinct from the corresponding domains of thionin precursors of other plant species.

The abnormally high level of bilirubin (BR) in biofluids (human serum and urine) indicates a high probability of jaundice and liver dysfunction. However, quantification of BR as the Jaundice biomarker is difficult due to the interference of various biomolecules in serum and urine. To address this issue, we developed a fluorescence-based detection strategy, for which yellow emissive carbon dots (YCDs) were produced from a one-step solvothermal process using phloroglucinol and thionin acetate as chemical precursors.

An organoclay/copper-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite was synthesized using a solvothermal method by growing a Cu-BTC (copper(ii) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate) MOF from a mixture of the MOF precursor solution in which various amounts of organoclay had been dispersed. The organoclay was obtained by intercalating a cationic dye, namely thionin, into a natural Cameroonian clay sampled in Sagba deposit (North West of Cameroon). The organoclay and the as-synthesized composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) techniques.

The excess accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides derived from the sequential cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by secretases, is one of the toxic key events leading to neuronal loss in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Studies have shown that cholinergic activity may also be involved in the regulation of APP metabolism. In the current study, we have investigated the roles of toluidine blue O (TBO) and thionine (TH), newly recognized phenothiazine-derived cholinesterase inhibitors, on the metabolism of APP in Chinese hamster ovary cells stably expressing human APP751 and presenilin 1 (PS70 cells).

A One-Pot Chemically Cleavable Bis-Linker Tether Strategy for the Synthesis of Heterodimeric Peptides.

Heterodimeric peptides linked by disulfide bonds are attractive drug targets. However, their chemical assembly can be tedious, time-consuming, and low yielding. Inspired by the cellular synthesis of pro-insulin in which the two constituent peptide chains are expressed as a single-chain precursor separated by a connecting C-peptide, we have developed a novel chemically cleavable bis-linker tether which allows the convenient assembly of two peptide chains as a single "pro"-peptide on the same solid support.
