In the eighth week of pregnancy the medical indication for induced abortion was established due to an exacerbating acute intermittent porphyria with life-threatening neurological symptoms. delta-aminolaevulinic acid and porphobilinogen were excessively increased in urine prior to the operation. Anaesthesia was induced with a bolus of propofol, alfentanil and droperidol, maintained by 67% of nitrous oxide and small bolus injections of the three drugs. The patient regained consciousness immediately after the operation, and reached full orientation and cooperativeness within five minutes. The postoperative period remained uneventful and the neurological and psychological symptoms returned to the pre-exacerbation status. Chorion gonadotropins and porphyria markers decreased within the next four weeks accompanied by a simultaneously progressing clinical improvement. The use of propofol and the other drugs appears justified even in exacerbated porphyria.

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), also known as human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), is the primary etiologic cause of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and KSHV Inflammatory Cytokine Syndrome (KICS). Patients with KICS demonstrate symptoms of systemic inflammation, high KSHV viral load, elevation of inflammatory markers, and increased mortality. Management requires rapid diagnosis, treatment of underlying HIV, direct treatment of KS, and addressing the hyperimmune response.

Background: A nonadjustable state of the programmable shunt valve is a rare phenomenon. This case report aims to explore the cause of pressure adjustment dysfunction in a programmable shunt valve in a middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst-peritoneal shunt patient and to underscore this dysfunction as an indicator of shunt valve obstruction.
Case Presentation: A child with a ruptured giant arachnoid cyst in the left middle cranial fossa presented with acute intracranial hypertension following head trauma.

Background: Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is directly associated with early acute articular cartilage injury. Inhibition of cartilage destruction immediately following joint damage can effectively slow or prevent PTOA progression. Therefore, we sought to determine intervention targets and therapeutic strategies in the acute stage of cartilage injury.

Little is known about the potential impact of point source contamination from seed treatment pesticide residues and degradation products in waste products in treated seed. The presence of these pesticides and their degradation products in the environment has been associated with toxic effects on non-target organisms including bees, aquatic organisms and humans. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of twenty-two pesticide residues and their degradation products in two streams receiving runoff from land-applied wet cake, applied and spilled wastewater originating at a biofuels production facility using pesticide-treated seed as a feedstock.
