Optimizing Surgical Correction of Symblepharon Secondary to Lower Eyelid Burn Scar.

Cureus

December 2024

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Hospital de Santa Maria, Unidade Local de Saúde de Santa Maria (ULSSM), Lisbon, PRT.

The healing of lower eyelid injuries can lead to anatomical distortion and compromise the function of multiple periocular structures. To restore eyelid function and aesthetics, it is crucial to establish an accurate diagnosis and provide appropriate treatment to the affected structures. The presented case describes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a lower eyelid symblepharon, which can be easily misdiagnosed as other scarring sequelae.

Background: The incidence of revision shoulder arthroplasty continues to rise, and infection is a common indication for revision surgery. Treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in the shoulder remains a controversial topic, with the literature reporting varying methodologies, including the use of debridement and implant retention, single-stage and 2-stage surgeries, antibiotic spacers, and resection arthroplasty. Single-stage revision has been shown to have a low rate of recurrent infection, making it more favorable because it precludes the morbidity of a 2-stage operation.

Purpose: Distal radius fractures may include difficult-to-treat fractures of the volar ulnar corner, colloquially termed as the "critical corner." These fragments are problematic because they are often missed, and their fixation is difficult. We aimed to compare the distal extent of the exposure of the volar surface of the distal radius between the classic Henry approach and the extended flexor carpi radialis (EFCR) approach.
