The dynamics of the changes in sensitivity of gonococci to penicillin within 1958-1974 was studied. It was shown that penicillin sensitivity of gonococci decreased. The sensitivty of gonococci was transferred on passages which explains predominant isolation of the resistant strains from males with fresh gonorrhea and from females with chronic gonorrhea and girls. Gonococci with low sensitivity levels to penicillin were isolated from most of the patients with complicated and ascending forms of gonorrhea. The resistance development was often preceded by irrational and incompleted therapy.

Define microbiological characteristics of pathogens causing lower urinary tract infections (LUTI), frequency of (CT) or (GC), and accuracy of self-diagnosis by college women with LUTI symptoms. Sexually active women with LUTI symptoms attending a large south-eastern university. Participants completed a 15-question Qualtrics™ survey, provided urine for urinalysis and culture and a self-collected vaginal swab for CT/GC testing.

Article Synopsis
  • * Background: STI cases are rising in Europe, and the research utilizes data from GPs, who are the primary healthcare contact for most of the population (94.1%), to monitor five specific STIs.
  • * Findings: A total of 1,009 STI cases were reported, predominantly among men and individuals under 30; women showed higher rates of chlamydia and herpes, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance in at-risk populations.

Article Synopsis
  • The emergence of the FC428 clone of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ng) has led to concerns about antimicrobial resistance, with ceftriaxone being the last remaining effective treatment option due to the development of high-level resistance associated with a newly identified allele.
  • Analysis of 2,104 genomes showed that three isolates with high-level ceftriaxone resistance grouped in a lineage that includes strains primarily from North America and Southeast Asia, indicating significant global spread and interconnectedness of resistant strains.
  • The study identifies potential recombination events that could contribute to the evolution of resistant strains, highlighting the complex nature of antimicrobial resistance and the need for ongoing surveillance and research.
