HTM agar was used for in vitro study of bêta-lactam antibiotics activity on H. influenzae. Tested strains belong to the three ampicillin phenotypes: sensitive, betalactamase production and ampicillin resistance without production of betalactamase. Using 2 micrograms ampicillin disk, diameters > or = 20 mm and < 20 mm separate ampicillin sensitive and resistant strains. The following zone-size breakpoints could be suggested: ampicillin (10 micrograms) > or = 25 and < 22 mm; amoxicillin (25 micrograms) > or = 26 mm and < 23 mm; ampicillin/sulbactam (10/10 micrograms) > or = 25 mm and < 22 mm; amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (20/10 micrograms) > or = 26 mm and < 23 mm; cefaclor (30 micrograms) > or = 25 mm and < 20 mm; cefuroxime (10 micrograms) > or = 22 mm and < 19 mm; cefixime (10 micrograms) and cefpodoxime (10 micrograms) > or = 26 mm; cefotaxime (30 micrograms) et ceftriaxone (30 micrograms) > or = 30 mm. The zone-size breakpoints concentrations, distribution of bacterial populations, mechanisms of resistance. In vitro study may screen for ampicillin resistance mechanisms.

COVID-19 disease, triggered by SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, has led to more than 7.0 million deaths worldwide, with a significant fraction of recovered infected people reporting postviral symptoms. Smart surfaces functionalized with nanoparticles are a powerful tool to inactivate the virus and prevent the further spreading of the disease.

Dust aerosols significantly impact climate, human health, and ecosystems, but how land cover changes (LCC) influence dust concentrations remains unclear. Here, we applied the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to assess the effects of LCC on dust aerosol concentrations from 2000 to 2020 in northern China. Based on land cover data derived from multi-source satellite remote sensing data, we conducted two simulation scenarios: one incorporating actual annual LCC and another assuming static land cover since 2000.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a hormone with a long evolutionary history, dating back to the earliest living organisms, of which modern (ABA-producing) cyanobacteria are likely descendants, which existed long before the separation of the plant and animal kingdoms, with a conserved role as signals regulating cell responses to environmental challenges. In mammals, along with the anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective function of ABA, nanomolar ABA regulates the metabolic response to glucose availability by stimulating glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue via an insulin-independent mechanism and increasing metabolic energy production and also dissipation in brown and white adipocytes. Chronic ABA intake of micrograms per Kg body weight improves blood glucose, lipids, and morphometric parameters (waist circumference and body mass index) in borderline subjects for prediabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Background: DJ-1 is a protein whose mutation causes rare heritable forms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and is of interest as a target for treating PD and other disorders. This work used high performance affinity microcolumns to screen and examine the binding of small molecules to DJ-1, as could be used to develop new therapeutics or to study the role of DJ-1 in PD. Non-covalent entrapment was used to place microgram quantities of DJ-1 in an unmodified form within microcolumns, which were then used in multiple studies to analyze binding by model compounds and possible drug candidates to DJ-1.

Background: Preclinical studies have documented the role of alpha-adrenergic agonists in myometrial contraction. Phenylephrine is frequently used to prevent and treat post-spinal hypotension during cesarean delivery. We hypothesized phenylephrine would reduce postpartum blood loss due to alpha-1 receptor-mediated uterine and vascular smooth muscle contraction.
