Management of the behavioral complications of dementia, including agitation and aggression, presents a tremendous challenge to families and caregivers of afflicted patients. Most previous pharmacotherapies have shown minimal efficacy and significant side effects. We report our initial, open-label experience using the anticonvulsant sodium valproate in four dementia patients with severe behavioral disturbance. The drug was well tolerated by all patients, with no side effects or laboratory abnormalities, during 1- to 3-month trials. Two patients showed significant improvement in behavior, and a third had a transient response. Valproate may be a useful agent in the treatment of behavioral disturbance in dementia; controlled trials are needed to document its efficacy.

Members of the phylum inhabit a wide range of ecosystems including soils. We analysed the global patterns of distribution and habitat preferences of various lineages across major ecosystems (soil, engineered, host-associated, marine, non-marine saline and alkaline and terrestrial non-soil ecosystems) in 248 559 publicly available metagenomic datasets. Classes , , and were highly ubiquitous and showed a clear preference to soil over non-soil habitats, while classes and showed preferences to non-soil habitats.

Background And Objectives: Insomnia symptoms are more prevalent in older age and may be impacted by negative perceptions of aging; however, more research is needed. The present study characterizes the relationship between negative aging stereotypes and clinical insomnia symptoms in a nationally representative sample of older United States (U.S.

This study explores the propagation dynamics of Bessel-Gaussian (BG) beams, focusing on vortex-splitting behavior under short-range atmospheric conditions with varying disturbances. Using the split-step beam propagation method, the research reveals that greater atmospheric turbulence and longer transmission distances enhance both the average vortex splitting distance and its variance while reducing the average topological charge of the received OAM mode. Conversely, laminar conditions promote beam stability.

Coherent lensless imaging usually suffers from coherent noise and twin-image artifacts. In the terahertz (THz) range, where wavelengths are 2 to 4 orders of magnitude longer than those in the visible spectrum, the coherent noise manifests primarily as parasitic interference fringes and edge diffraction, rather than speckle noise. In this work, to suppress the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) interference fringes, we propose a novel method, which involves the averaging over multiple diffraction patterns that are acquired at equal intervals within a sample's half-wavelength axial shift.

Cultural differences in diagnosis and treatment perceptions: Turkish collectivistic representations of common mental disorders.

Purpose: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is less diagnosed among Turkish children, and Turkish clients drop out more often from depression treatments than Dutch clients. This article proposes that cultural differences in collectivistic versus individualistic perceptions of getting an ADHD diagnosis and being treated for depression might explain these ethnic disparities, which have been explored in this study.

Methods: Nine focus group discussions with Turkish individuals and 18 interviews with primary mental health practitioners were conducted.
