Phenothiazines and their metabolites are known to interfere in the quantification of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). A method for selective chemical modification of phenothiazines by chloramine-T in the presence of TCAs is described. This method allows for accurate quantification of the TCA analyte in a serum sample without interference from the modified phenothiazine.

Background: The risks associated with medications and co-medications for chronic pain (CP) can influence a physician's choice of drugs and dosages, as well as a patient's adherence to the medication. High-quality care requires patients to participate in medication decisions. This study aimed to compare perceived risks of medications and co-medications between physicians and persons living with CP.

The combination of the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline hydrochloride (AMH) and the non-selective beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol hydrochloride (PPH) is used for migraine prophylaxis. Higher doses of AMH trigger cardiac arrhythmias, anxiety, tachycardia, convulsions, hyperglycemia and anticholinergic side effects. The combined dosage formulation of AMH and PPH leads to drug-drug interactions; causes sedation, xerostomia, dysuria, insomnia and bradycardia; and results in patient non-compliance.

Student Research Committee, Department of Clinical Biochemistry, School of Medicine, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

Electrochemical biosensors have revolutionized the detection of biomarkers related to depression and the quantification of antidepressant drugs. These biosensors leverage nanomaterials and advanced assay designs to achieve high sensitivity and selectivity for clinically relevant analytes. Key neurotransmitters implicated in depression, such as serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate, can be accurately measured via biosensors, providing insights into the effects of antidepressant treatments on neurotransmission.

Article Synopsis
  • A new ultra-high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS) method was developed to detect the antibiotic vancomycin in human plasma by using protein precipitation and counter-extraction.
  • The method achieved effective separation of vancomycin and its metabolite norvancomycin, allowing for precise quantification with a linear range of 0.5-100 µg/mL.
  • The study demonstrated that this analytical technique is suitable for therapeutic drug monitoring by processing 45 human plasma samples with high sensitivity and accuracy.

An Integrated Assessment of Different Depositional Paleoenvironment Using Nitrogen Markers and Biomarkers after Chromatographic Methods Optimization.

ACS Omega

September 2024

Programa de Pós graduação Geoquímica: Petróleo e Meio Ambiente, Instituto de Geociências, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador 40170-290, BA, Brazil.

In this study, chromatographic methods were first optimized to ensure the robustness of the identification and quantification of nitrogen markers and biomarkers. Then, the optimal conditions were applied to 14 crude oil samples deposited in distinct paleoenvironments from Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia to perform an integrated geochemical assessment. Analytical standards, certified reference material, and retention indices were used to confirm the identification of biomarkers and N-markers.
