Varicocele must be regarded of the utmost importance in determinating male infertility. Surgical indications should be considered of primary interest in order to achieve a qualitative and quantitative improvement in spermiogram parameters in the majority of the cases. Recent reports showed that it is not the severity of the lesions to determine the alterations in seminal parameters but the length of time of the varicocele. In our report we consider the results achieved on the spermiogram parameters in two groups of 25 patients surgical treated with different techniques. The first group was treated, in others Centers, by means of the traditional technique of ligature of the spermatic vein (Ivanissevich, Palomo). We treated all the patients of the second group (53 patients) with microsurgical technique of anastomosis pampiniform plexus-saphenous vein, and we control the sepermiogram parameters in 25 patients. The first group showed an improvement of the spermiogram parameters after 6 months from the surgical treatment in the 64% of the cases, while in the second group the improvement was of the 92%. Moreover we registered the persistence of this improvement after 12/36 months from the operation time. On the basis of these observations we think that the microsurgical technique leads to the best and longest results on the most invalidating cause of this pathology.

Background: This study reports our seven-year experience of one-year follow-up results after scrotal and testicular trauma, classified according to the Gülhane Grading System (GGS). We provide detailed hormonal analyses, ultrasound (US) evaluations, and spermiogram results. There are no previous studies that focus on all these detailed topics in relation to a grading system.

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of age, body mass index, and diet factors on sperm parameters and developing a novel index (Artuklu Sperm Quality Index [ASQI]).

Method: The study incorporated a total of 115 patients who sought medical attention due to infertility and underwent semen analysis (spermiogram). The ASQI score was developed.

Effect of thymoquinone on NRF2/NF-kB/MAPK pathway in methotrexate-induced rat testis injury.

Iran J Basic Med Sci

January 2024

Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the protective effects of Thymoquinone (THQ) against testicular damage induced by Methotrexate (MTX) in rats.
  • The experiment involved five groups and included sperm analysis, histopathology, and biochemical tests to assess the impact on testicular health.
  • Results showed that THQ significantly improved sperm quality and testicular function parameters, indicating its potential role in mitigating infertility caused by chemotherapy.

This study aims to investigate the role of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death, in male infertility. The motivation behind this research stems from the increasing recognition of oxidative stress and iron metabolism dysregulation as critical factors in male reproductive health. In this study, 28 infertile patients (grouped by the presence of urogenital infections or varicocele) and 19 fertile men were selected.

Telomeric RNAs, TERRA, as a Potential Biomarker for Spermatozoa Quality.

Reprod Sci

November 2024

IVIRMA Global Research Alliance, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe), Valencia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of long non-coding telomeric repeat-containing RNAs as potential biomarkers for idiopathic male infertility, focusing on two groups of men: those with normal sperm (normozoospermic) and those with reduced sperm quality (oligoasthenozoospermic).
  • Findings reveal that oligoasthenozoospermic men not only had worse sperm quality but also produced embryos with lower inner-cell-mass quality, and they exhibited shorter telomeres and more sperm with abnormal telomeric structures compared to normozoospermic men.
  • A positive correlation was noted between telomeric RNA levels and sperm motility in normozoospermic men, suggesting
