Respiratory complicˆations are the major cause of morbidity and mortality among preterm infants, which is partially prevented by the administration of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS). Most very preterm infants are exposed to chorioamnionitis, but short- and long-term effects of ACS treatment in this setting are not well defined. In low-resource settings, ACS increased neonatal mortality by perhaps increasing infection.

Folic acid rescues corticosteroid-induced vertebral malformations in chick embryos through targeting TGF-β signaling.

J Cell Physiol

November 2020

Division of Histology and Embryology, Joint Laboratory for Embryonic, Development and Prenatal Medicine, Medical College, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results indicated that a concentration of 100 pmol/egg FA promoted vertebral ossification and collagen production by enhancing key osteogenic gene expressions like Runx2 and Osterix, alongside activating TGF-β signaling pathways.
  • * Additionally, when skeletal development was impaired using dexamethasone (Dex), FA supplementation considerably improved bone mass and growth plate turnover, suggesting that FA may counteract bone loss and enhance skeletal development during embryogenesis.

Claudin18 associated with corticosteroid-induced expression of surfactant proteins in pulmonary epithelial cells.

J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med

March 2019

a Key Laboratory of Birth Defects and Related Diseases of Women and Children (Sichuan University), Ministry of Education, Department of Pediatrics , West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu , China.

Objective: The present study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that if Cldn18 is associated with lung maturation and play a key role in the corticosteroid-induced expression of surfactant proteins.

Methods: Mouse embryonic lung tissue at different developmental stages (E14.5, E16.

Objective: To analyze the effect of maternal betamethasone given for fetal lung maturation on fetal short-term variation (STV) and average acceleration and deceleration capacity (AAC/ADC). Both of these factors are calculated by phase-rectified signal averaging (PRSA) and represent new parameters to assess the fetal autonomic nervous system.

Study Design: A longitudinal prospective study including 26 pregnant women at risk for preterm delivery was performed.

[Prevention of preterm birth complications by antenatal corticosteroid administration].

J Gynecol Obstet Biol Reprod (Paris)

December 2016

Service de gynécologie obstétrique, hôpital Robert-Debré, AP-HP, 48, boulevard Serrurier, 75019 Paris, France; Université Paris Diderot, 75010 Paris, France. Electronic address:

Objective: To evaluate short- and long-term benefits and risks associated with antenatal administration of a single course of corticosteroids and the related strategies: multiple and rescue courses.

Methods: The PubMed database, the Cochrane Library and the recommendations from the French and foreign obstetrical societies or colleges have been consulted.

Results: Antenatal administration of a single course of corticosteroids before 34 weeks of gestation is associated in the neonatal period with a significant reduction of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and death (LE1), and in possibly childhood with a reduction of cerebral palsy and increased psychomotor development index and intact survival (LE3).
