Frameless method of stereotaxic localization with DSA.

Published: December 1993

Purpose: To improve a method of stereotaxic localization with digital subtraction angiography that does not require use of a localization frame fixed to the patient's skull during examination.

Materials And Methods: An independent, low-cost, stereotaxic computing system was devised. Software programs used magnetic resonance images, computed tomographic scans, and digitized radiographs of plastic bone implants with head landmarks to establish reference trihedrons in each imaging system, transpose target coordinates from one system to another, adjust surgical instruments, help plan radiation surgery, and compute and display isodose curves.

Results: The geometric distortions of the image intensifier were corrected. Distortion problems of the conic projection were solved, and three-dimensional localization was achieved with only two associated front and lateral views. Accuracy to within 1 mm was achieved for the three coordinates.

Conclusion: This frameless stereotaxic localization technique is highly accurate and reliable. The system allows maximum automation of examination procedures.

Neural processing of auditory stimuli in rats: Translational aspects using auditory oddball paradigms.

Background: The three-class oddball paradigm allows to investigate the processing of behaviorally relevant and irrelevant auditory stimuli. In humans, event-related potentials (ERPs) are used as neural correlate of behavior. We recorded local field potentials (LFPs) within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in rats during three-class and passive two-class oddball paradigms and analyzed the ERPs focusing on similarities to human recordings.

Psychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression, are highly comorbid in people with epilepsy. However, the mechanisms mediating the shared pathophysiology are currently unknown. There is considerable evidence implicating the basolateral amygdala (BLA) in the network communication of anxiety and fear, a process demonstrated to involve parvalbumin-positive (PV) interneurons.

Background: Neurological complications are a significant concern of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the pathogenic mechanism of neurological symptoms associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is poorly understood.

Methods: We used Drosophila as a model to systematically analyze SARS-CoV-2 genes encoding structural and accessory proteins and identified the membrane protein (M) that disrupted mitochondrial functions in vivo.

Objective: Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is widely used to characterise epileptic networks and guide resection in paediatric epilepsy surgery programmes. The insula, with its extensive connectivity with temporal and extratemporal structures, has increasingly been seen as a possible surgical target. We report our seizure outcomes after SEEG-guided resection of the insula in a paediatric cohort.

Technical challenges and outcomes of stereotactic biopsies in the posterior fossa: Experience with ZD-inomed and leksell vantage frames.

Acta Neurochir (Wien)

Department of Neurosurgery, Medizinische Fakultät und Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Fetscherstraße 74, 01307, Dresden, Germany.

Introduction: Stereotactic brain biopsies are essential for obtaining tissue samples from brain lesions, crucial for comprehensive histological analysis and subsequent adjuvant therapies. While most biopsies target supratentorial lesions, those involving the posterior fossa are less frequent but pose significant technical and surgical challenges, necessitating careful patient management.

Methods: We present our experience with stereotactic biopsies of the posterior fossa using the Leksell Vantage frame (Elekta, Stockholm, Sweden) and the ZD Inomed frame (Inomed Medizintechnik GmbH, Emmendingen, Germany).
