Perturbations in Microbial Communities at Hydrothermal Vents of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands, Italy).

Biology (Basel)

January 2025

Dipartimento Scienze e Tecnologie Biologiche, Chimiche e Farmaceutiche, University of Palermo, Viale delle Scienze, 90128 Palermo, Italy.

Marine hydrothermal ecosystems represent extreme environments connected to submarine volcanic areas characterized by vents, having high temperatures and particular chemical compositions. The hydrothermal marine system of Panarea, located in one of the seven small islands belonging to the Aeolian Archipelago (southern Tyrrhenian Sea), is characterized by a range of vents exhibiting diverse physical and chemical conditions. We aimed to analyze the microbial community of a peculiar hot spring belonging to the Panarea hydrothermal field, known as "Black Point" (BP), in two separate sampling expeditions (May and August).

Microneedle patch-involved local therapy synergized with immune checkpoint inhibitor for pre- and post-operative cancer treatment.

J Control Release

The metastasis and recurrence of cancer post-surgery remain the major reasons for treatment failures. Herein, a photo-immune nanoparticle decorating with M1 macrophage membrane (BD@LM) is designed based on the inflammatory environment after surgical resection. By loading photosensitizer black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and chemotherapeutics doxorubicin (DOX) in BD@LM nanoparticles, an effective chemophototherapy-mediated immunogenic cell death of tumor cells is triggered, subsequently leading to the maturation of dendritic cells for further immune cascade.

Machine learning accelerated nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of materials with excitonic effects.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Photochemistry, Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, China.

This study presents an efficient methodology for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics of complex materials with excitonic effects by integrating machine learning (ML) models with simplified Tamm-Dancoff approximation (sTDA) calculations. By leveraging ML models, we accurately predict ground-state wavefunctions using unconverged Kohn-Sham (KS) Hamiltonians. These ML-predicted KS Hamiltonians are then employed for sTDA-based excited-state calculations (sTDA/ML).

Symmetry is a salient visual feature in the natural world, yet the perception of symmetry may be influenced by how natural lighting conditions (e.g., shading) fall on the object relative to its symmetry axis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how race and ethnicity influence antibiotic usage among hospitalized children, utilizing data from over 846,000 inpatient visits in 2022 across the Pediatric Health Information System.
  • Findings indicate that Non-Hispanic Black children were less likely to receive antibiotics compared to Non-Hispanic White children, while Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander children had a higher likelihood of receiving them.
  • The authors suggest that hospitals should re-evaluate their policies regarding antibiotic prescriptions to address these disparities, and further research is needed to better understand the factors contributing to these variations in treatment.
