The aim of this study was to evaluate clinically a bonded space maintainer, which would reduce chair-side time and cost. Sixty appliances were fabricated from 0.7 mm stainless steel round wire and bonded using light-cured composite to the two teeth adjacent to the site of extraction of a posterior primary tooth. Twenty males and sixteen females (age range 5-9-years-old) were selected from the Pedodontic clinic of the State University of Rio de Janeiro. The sixty space maintainers were divided into two groups according to the site in which they were placed: a) absent first primary molar and b) absent second primary molar. Impressions and study models were obtained prior to and 6 months after bonding the appliances. During this period only 8.3% of failures were observed, most of them from occlusal or facial trauma. Student t-test did not show statistically significant alterations in the sizes of the maintained spaces during the trial period.

Civil and geotechnical researchers are searching for economical alternatives to replace traditional soil stabilizers such as cement, which have negative impacts on the environment. Chitosan biopolymer has shown its capacity to efficiently minimize soil erosion, reduce hydraulic conductivity, and adsorb heavy metals in soil that is contaminated. This research used unconfined compression strength (UCS) to investigate the impact of chitosan content, long-term strength assessment, acid concentration, and temperature on the improvement of soil strength.

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid in the Gas and Crystal Phases and Its Intercalation in Montmorillonite-An Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Molecules

January 2025

Instituto Andaluz de Ciencias de la Tierra (IACT-CSIC), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Av. de las Palmeras 4, 18100 Armilla, Granada, Spain.

Many properties of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) depend on its molecular environment, such as whether it is an isolated molecule, a dimer, or in a crystalline state. The molecular geometry, conformational analysis, and vibrational spectrum of 2,4-D were theoretically calculated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. A new slightly more stable conformer was found, which is different to those previously reported.

Advancements and Perspectives in Biodegradable Polyester Elastomers: Toward Sustainable and High-Performance Materials.

Academy for Engineering and Technology, Yiwu Research Institute, Zhuhai Fudan Innovation Institute, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China.

While the traditional rubber industry faces the severe pressure of environmental pollution and carbon emissions, bio-based and biodegradable elastomers have become a hot topic in the field and drawn intensive research interest. Inspired by polyester resin, incorporating polyol or polycarboxylic acid as a branching unit into aliphatic polyester and/or introducing a monomer with a C=C bond to provide open-bond cross-linking in the fashion of common vulcanization to form three-dimensional network structures are two mainstream strategies for designing biodegradable polyester elastomers (BPEs). Both methods encounter more or fewer problems, such as poor mechanical and thermal properties due to the easy hydrolysis of the ester bond and space hinderance, or the potential harm of the remaining degraded small molecules with olefin bonds.

(Z)-3-butylamino-4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)but-2-en-1-one (1), a new β-aminoenone, has been investigated in terms of its intra- and intermolecular interactions. Vibrational, electronic and NMR spectroscopies were used for the characterization, while X-ray diffraction methods afforded the determination of the crystal structure. The compound is arranged in the crystal lattice as centre-symmetric H-bonded dimeric aggregates (C2/c monoclinic space group).
