Man's failure to extract deeply embedded thorns and arrowheads, with bare hands and teeth, stimulated 'instrument substitutes' mimicking these appendages. Evidence from primitive communities suggest animal, plant and mineral items were employed, both before and after metal became the standard material of today's armamentarium. Changing surgical instrument composition has mirrored concurrent technology and manufacturing methods both of which are reviewed. Particular significance is accorded flint, bronze, crucible steel, thermal sterilisation, nickel-plate, stainless steel and disposable plastics. The paper is based on an exhibition From Flint to Stainless Steel on display at the College.

This study explores and discusses the design, the manufacturing and the morphology of three-dimensional (3D) multilayered weft interlaced woven fabrics using stainless steel fibers on the electromagnetic shielding efficiency (SE). Design solutions of 3D multilayered interlaced fabrics in relation to electromagnetic shielding efficiency are still not sufficiently investigated. Moreover, this study aims to analyze the differences in the internal geometry of 3D multilayered weft interlaced fabrics with different number of layers and frequency of connecting points in multilayered woven fabrics on electromagnetic SE.

The magnetic material Nd2Fe14B is one of the strongest magnetic materials found in nature. The demand for the production of these nanoparticles is significantly high due to their exceptional properties. The aim of the present study is to synthesize magnetic nanoparticles of Nd2Fe14B using ethanol in the wet ball milling technique (WBMT).

The non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose by direct oxidation using electrodes modified with suitable electrocatalysts is now well-established. However, it most often requires highly alkaline media, limiting dramatically the use of such electrodes at neutral pH. This is notably the case of Ni-based electrodes.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic compounds resulting from incomplete burning of organic materials. This work describes the successful layer-by-layer fabrication of a novel zinc oxide nanocomposite made of zinc oxide nanoparticles, aniline, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes on a stainless steel wire by electrodeposition. The coating and extraction conditions were screened, optimized, and validated using factorial design and central composite design, respectively.

Vibration sensors are integral to a multitude of engineering applications, yet the development of low-cost, easily assembled devices remains a formidable challenge. This study presents a highly sensitive flexible vibration sensor, based on the piezoresistive effect, tailored for the detection of high-dynamic-range vibrations and accelerations. The sensor's design incorporates a polylactic acid (PLA) housing with cavities and spherical recesses, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane, and electrodes that are positioned above.
