In this paper, using a pluralistic perspective on the psyche, I consider theoretical formulations concerned with the development of the self in relation to the environment. This includes discussion about how the infant interacts with its maternal environment before birth and how observation of the foetus in the womb and infant research have important implications affecting our understanding of adult psychopathology. I briefly look at the object-related nature of religious experience and the concept of the development of a representation of God. Furthermore, I explore the object-related nature of the Laius myth as the deeper realm and the homo-erotic component in the Oedipal conflict, with emphasis on the link between oracular literalism and literalizing obsessionality. Finally, I show how all of these elements manifested in the course of my work with a very disturbed male patient in whom the transferential relationship uncovered a psychopathic pocket; and how my life was put in danger when his defences took the form of an impulse to kill: he became murderous.

We investigated the spontaneous tendency of dog puppies, kittens and wolf pups to match their behaviour to actions demonstrated by a human, in the absence of food reward. Based on dogs' inherent sociality and domestication history, we predicted that the tendency to match human actions is more pronounced in this species than in the other two. To test this, we exposed N = 42 dog puppies, N = 39 kittens and N = 8 wolf pups to ostensive human demonstrations of an object-related action.

Although mechanisms of mate preference are thought to be relatively hard-wired, experience with appetitive and consummatory sexual reward has been shown to condition preferences for partner related cues and even objects that predict sexual reward. Here, we reviewed evidence from laboratory species and humans on sexually conditioned place, partner, and ejaculatory preferences in males and females, as well as the neurochemical, molecular, and epigenetic mechanisms putatively responsible. From a comprehensive review of the available data, we concluded that opioid transmission at μ opioid receptors forms the basis of sexual pleasure and reward, which then sensitizes dopamine, oxytocin, and vasopressin systems responsible for attention, arousal, and bonding, leading to cortical activation that creates awareness of attraction and desire.

The hippocampus is involved in the formation of memories that require associations among stimuli to construct representations of space and the items and events within that space. Neurons in the dentate gyrus (DG), an initial input region of the hippocampus, have robust spatial tuning, but it is unclear how nonspatial information may be integrated with spatial activity in this region. We recorded from the DG of 21 adult mice as they foraged for food in an environment that contained discrete objects.
