Orthodontic treatment using cermet dentures was carried out in 496 patients aged 26 to 60. Therapeutic surgical and orthodontic treatment of the maxillodental system was carried out before denture fixation. Late results in periods from 1 to 5 years were followed up in 396 patients. No complications were observed in 384 (96.9%). Only 12 patients developed complications: porcelain fracture in 4, periodontal inflammations in 5, and a partial relapse of occlusion reduction and distal dislocation of the mandible in 3.

Objectives: In recent years, one of the foci of orthodontics has been on systems for the evaluation of treatment results and the tracking of tissue variations over time. This can be accomplished through analysing three-dimensional orthodontic images obtained before and after the treatments. Since complementary information is achieved by integrating multiple imaging modalities, cone beam CT (CBCT) and stereophotogrammetry technologies are used in this study to develop a method for tracking bone, teeth and facial soft-tissue variations over time.

Oral rehabilitation using pre-shaped Epitec fixation systems after extensive maxillary tumor surgery.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

March 2009

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Saga Medical School, 5-1-1 Nabeshima, Saga 849-8501, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Reconstruction of maxillary defects is a significant challenge for surgeons, and the authors present two successful cases of malignant tumors in the maxilla repaired with immediate prostheses using an Epitec-system.
  • The Epitec-plates offered strong support for the maxillodental prosthesis, enhancing retention and functionality right after surgery.
  • A craniofacial skull model was created to improve the fitting of Epitec-plates and streamline the surgical process, allowing for an efficient and immediate maxillary prosthesis placement post-tumor resection.

Monitoring of the maxillodental system in children born and living in regions contaminated by radiation as a result of the Chernobyl accident was carried out in 1997-2002 within the framework of Federal Program "Children of Russia", section "Chernobyl Children". Analysis of 5-year changes in the maxillodental morphology and function showed a trend to improvement: the prevalence of normal-for-age status increased and the parameters of maxillodental function normalized.

Mathematical simulation, estimation, and evaluation of stress-deformed status of bone tissue under the roots of functionally loaded mandibular abutment teeth after their depulpation were carried out. The resultant mathematical model, realized in the SPLEN-K system, is the key stage in the development and subsequent clinical application of automated diagnosis and consultation complex for patients with dentition defects.
