Nonionic detergents Triton X-100 and Brij 36T induce dissociation and aggregation of the protein sesame alpha-globulin above the critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of the detergents. Spectrophotometric titration in Triton shows no change in the pKInt value of the tyrosyl groups at 1x10-3 M detergent where both dissociation and aggregation of the protein are observed. Fluorescence measurement does not indicate any change in the environment of the tryptophan groups of the protein in Brij. Viscosity measurements show no major conformational change of the protein in the detergent solution. Binding measurements suggest that perhaps micelles of the detergent predominantly bind to the protein. The detergent micelles preferentially bind to the exposed hydrophobic surfaces of the protein subunits. The association of the protein detergent complex through electrostatic interaction is probably responsible for the formation of the aggregates.

Organic solar cells have seen significant progress in the past 2 decades with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 20% but mostly based on high-cost photovoltaic materials. Polythiophenes (PTs) without a fused-ring structure are good candidates as low-cost donor materials, deserving more attention for studying. In this work, ester-substituted thiazole (E-Tz) was explored as the electron-withdrawing unit to design PTs, and further optimization on the fluorinated/nonfluorinated donor segment contents via copolymerization strategy was simultaneously performed, yielding polymer donors of PTETz-100F, PTETz-80F, and PTETz-0F.

In the present study, the stability of a supersaturated solution of indomethacin (IM) was evaluated in hydrophobically modified hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HM-HPMC) solutions, with and without parent cyclodextrins (CDs). A highly supersaturated state of IM was maintained in the HM-HPMC solution and was further stabilized by the addition of α-CD and β-CD. Notably, the highest level of supersaturation was achieved in HM-HPMC/α-CD solution, which maintained a high concentration of IM for up to 120 h.

PADI4 is one of the human isoforms of a family of enzymes involved in the conversion of arginine to citrulline. MDM2 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is critical for degradation of the tumor suppressor gene p53. We have previously shown that there is an interaction between MDM2 and PADI4 in cellulo, and that such interaction occurs through the N-terminal region of MDM2, N-MDM2, and in particular through residues Thr26, Val28, Phe91, and Lys98.

In this work, we have explored the metal ion sensing properties of two bisbenzimidazole-based fluorescent probes, that differ in their conformational flexibility, in an aqueous medium. The compound with a flexible methyl spacer (1) experienced blue shifts in its absorption and emission maxima (along with a turn-off response) upon the addition of Hg ions. On the contrary, the compound with a relatively rigid structure (2) showed red shifts in both its absorption and emission maxima (along with a turn-off response) when treated with Hg under similar conditions.

Cartilage repair remains a formidable challenge because of its limited regenerative capacity. Construction of a biomimetic hydrogel matrix that can induce cell aggregation is a promising therapeutic option. Cell aggregates are more beneficial than dissociated cells for improving survival and chondrogenic differentiation, thereby facilitating cartilage repair.
