Heart-on-a-chip (HoC) devices have emerged as a powerful tool for studying the human heart's intricate functions and dysfunctions in vitro. Traditional preclinical models, such as 2D cell cultures model and animal model, have limitations in accurately predicting human response to cardiovascular diseases and treatments. The HoC approach addresses these shortcomings by recapitulating the microscale anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of the heart, thereby providing a more clinically relevant platform for drug testing, disease modeling, and personalized therapy.

Probiotic active gel promotes diabetic wound healing through continuous local glucose consumption and antioxidant.

J Nanobiotechnology

January 2025

Shandong Key Laboratory of Proteins and Peptides Pharmaceutical Engineering, Shandong Universities Key Laboratory of Biological Medicine, School of Life Science and Technology, Shandong Second Medical University, 7166 # Baotong West Street, Weifang, Shandong, 261053, People's Republic of China.

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are severe complications of diabetes, posing significant health and societal challenges. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and elevated glucose levels are primary factors affecting diabetic wound healing. Achieving effective treatment by reducing ROS alone is challenging, as high glucose levels continuously drive ROS production.

Background: Intracellular membraneless organelles formed by liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) function in diverse physiological processes and have been linked to tumor-promoting properties. The nucleolus is one of the largest membraneless organelle formed through LLPS. Deubiquitylating enzymes (DUBs) emerge as novel therapeutic targets against human cancers.

Periodontal diseases in Down syndrome during childhood: a scoping review.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Université Paris Cité, Laboratory URP 2496 Orofacial Pathologies, Imaging, and Biotherapies, Faculty of odontology, Montrouge, France.

Background: Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic condition that involves the deregulation of immune function and is characterized by a proinflammatory phenotype leading to an impaired response to infections. Periodontitis is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease. It has been shown that adults and teenagers with DS are more susceptible to this disease, but a similar correlation in DS children remains elusive.

Background: Circular (circ)RNAs have emerged as crucial contributors to cancer progression. Nonetheless, the expression regulation, biological functions, and underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in mediating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression remain insufficiently elucidated.

Methods: We identified circUCK2(2,3) through circRNA sequencing, RT-PCR, and Sanger sequencing.
