Background: The humeral head resurfacing arthroplasty (HHR) is normally used as a hemi shoulder arthroplasty and has been in use for the treatment of Gleno-Humeral osteoarthritis (OA) of the shoulder for more than 30 years. Some studies, however, shows that anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty provides better improvement in function than a HHR for patients with OA. Reasons for this may be a progressive glenoid wear (GW) or loosening of the HHR.

This study presents a novel in vitro bilayer 3D co-culture platform designed to obtain cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs)-like cells. The platform consists of a bilayer hydrogel structure with a collagen/polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel for fibroblasts as the upper layer and an alginate hydrogel for tumor cells as the lower layer. The platform enabled paracrine interactions between fibroblasts and cancer cells, which allowed for selective retrieval of activated fibroblasts through collagenase treatment for further study.

Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) constitute a small and elusive subpopulation of cancer cells within a tumor mass and are characterized by stem cell properties. Reprogrammed CSCs exhibit similar capability to initiate tumor growth, metastasis, and chemo- and radio-resistance and have similar gene profiles to primary CSCs. However, the efficiency of cancer cell reprogramming remained relatively low.

Purpose: This paper outlines the commissioning of the Varian (VMS, Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) Universal Interstitial Cylinder (UIC) applicator set for Ir-192 HDR brachytherapy. The UIC was commissioned for use with CT and MRI and a custom phantom was designed to avoid the introduction of water-like materials into the needle guide tracks. Various marker strands were investigated to determine which allowed the most accurate reconstruction of source positions.

Predicting vulnerable coronary arteries: A combined radiomics-biomechanics approach.

December 2024

Laboratory of Biological Structure Mechanics (LaBS), Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering "Giulio Natta", Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.

Background And Objective: Nowadays, vulnerable coronary plaque detection from coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) is suboptimal, although being crucial for preventing major adverse cardiac events. Moreover, despite the suggestion of various vulnerability biomarkers, encompassing image and biomechanical factors, accurate patient stratification remains elusive, and a comprehensive approach integrating multiple markers is lacking. To this aim, this study introduces an innovative approach for assessing vulnerable coronary arteries and patients by integrating radiomics and biomechanical markers through machine learning methods.
