[Splenic metastases. Apropos of 4 cases].

J Chir (Paris)

Clinique Chirurgicale 1, Hôpital G et R Laënnec, Nantes.

Published: November 1993

The authors report about 4 cases of splenic metastases in patients with the following neoplasms: urothelial carcinoma of the left kidney, adenocarcinoma of the uterine body, adenocarcinoma of the left flexure of the colon, adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid loop. On large autopsy series, metastases to the spleen are not rare (7% in average), and rank 10th among the 44 metastatic sites described in the literature. Cancers of the breast, lung, skin (melanoma), ovaries and stomach (cardia) make up more than 60% of the primary tumors. The diagnosis is most often accidental (surveillance of operated patients), rarely clinical (pain, splenomegaly), and it is based on medical imaging (ultrasound, CT). In the absence of hemostatic disorders, percutaneous needle biopsies are possible. Treatment, when at all possible, is surgical (splenectomy) and must comply with carcinological rules.

: Medullary carcinoma of the small intestine is an exceptionally rare subtype of gastrointestinal cancer, characterized by its solid growth pattern and lack of glandular structures, which complicate timely diagnosis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, diagnostic delays for rare cancers became increasingly common due to the prioritization of COVID-related cases and patient reluctance to seek medical attention. : We present the case of a 70-year-old male initially misdiagnosed with COVID-19, whose persistent symptoms led to the eventual discovery of medullary carcinoma.

Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is a key mediator in antitumor immunity and immunotherapy responses, yet its clinical applications remain restricted to chronic granulomatous disease and malignant osteopetrosis. IFN-γ effectiveness as a standalone treatment has shown limited success in clinical trials and its potential for synergistic effects when combined with immunotherapies is under clinical exploration. A particularly compelling combination is that of IFN-γ with Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists that holds significant promise for cancer treatment.

The potential role of tumor deposits in the prognosis and TNM staging for colorectal cancer.

J Gastrointest Oncol

December 2024

Department of Oncology, The Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, Jiangsu Institute of Cancer Research, Nanjing, China.

Background: Tumor deposits (TDs) can impact proper staging of cancer, which is crucial for discussing prognosis and determining the appropriate treatment plan. Our study aimed to correlate how TDs influence prognosis of resected colorectal cancer (CRC) and how to optimize tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging with respect to TDs for clinical decision-making.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 611 patients with CRC treated in Jiangsu Cancer Hospital from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2020 among whom 197 had TDs.
