Autonomic and peptidergic innervation of the human larynx (vocal cords, ventricular folds, epiglottis, subglottic region and recurrent nerves) was studied by application of single and double immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay. In all tissues investigated, immunoreactivities for a variety of regulatory peptides were detected and included vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine methionine (PHM), helospectin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), C-flanking peptide of NPY (C-PON), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P and neurokinin A. In the recurrent nerves, only a few peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibers were found. The laryngeal region of the epiglottis and the subglottic region showed characteristic corpuscular nerves containing substance P and CGRP running underneath and within the epithelium.

Introduction: The prostate is densely innervated like many visceral organs and glands. However, studies to date have focused on sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves and little attention has been given to the presence or function of sensory nerves in the prostate. Recent studies have highlighted a role for sensory nerves beyond perception of noxious stimuli, as anterograde release of neuropeptides from sensory nerves can affect vascular tone and local immune responses.

The trigeminal ganglion (TG) comprises primary sensory neurons responsible for orofacial sensations, subsequently projecting to the trigeminal nuclei in the brainstem. However, the circuit basis of nasal mechanosensation is not well characterized. Here we elucidate the anatomical organization of both peripheral and central projections of the TG.

Postoperative pain management is challenging. We used mice with a transverse laparotomy to study tactile allodynia measured by the von Frey test, pain at rest measured by facial pain expressions detected by an artificial intelligence algorithm, and movement-induced pain measured by reductions in exploratory activity. The standard analgesics morphine and ibuprofen induced distinct patterns of outcome-dependent effects.

The transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) superfamily is a master regulator of development, adult homeostasis, and wound repair. Dysregulated TGFβ signaling can lead to cancer, fibrosis, and musculoskeletal malformations. We previously demonstrated that TGFβ receptor 2 () signaling regulates odontoblast differentiation, dentin mineralization, root elongation, and sensory innervation during tooth development.
